A perfect sultry poolside song that always sounds a little out of place if I hear it after Labor Day or during crisp weather. Still lovely…but it’s one of those pristine 80s summer jams that I’ll always associate with a very specific season and era.

First of all, I have serious arm envy. Madonna reminds me of Carrie Bradshaw here. Her look is SO 1999.
The psychedelic guitar reverb and groovy flute are irresistible. I remember loving the hell out of this tune, and it just takes me back to a magical time in pop culture.

Madonna has obvs had many reinventions in the span of her long career (I guess in 2025, they’d be called ‘’eras’’), but her woo-woo Ray of Light phase is still my favorite of all of them.
So many great tracks on this album! More will show up in my top ten. 😻

Martha Stewart would like a word.
(And also: James Comey, the FBI guy who tanked Hillary Clinton’s campaign was also the driving force behind Martha Stewart’s arrest. It’s almost *as if* he’s not comfortable with powerful women…)

Okay, Madonna is STUNNING. Her hair in this video is luscious, and her eyes are just extraordinary. Her face is so dramatically beautiful and it’s perfectly lit and showcased here.
To me, this song is about the painful wisdom gained via trauma. And that voice drives it home.

The video and vibe that launched a zillion wild perms, (probably inappropriate) Halloween costumes for young girls (🙋🏻♀️), and largely defined mid-80s fashion for a large swath of Gen-X. Lace! Neon leggings! A tangle of dangly necklaces! Fingerless gloves! Unsubtle makeup!

A sublime track from my fave Madonna album. William Orbit conjured magic from M when he produced Ray of Light.
That lush, multilayered electronica from the 90s is something my ears latched onto immediately and never stopped loving. And this album, IMO, is her magnum opus.

I have a clear memory of hearing this on the streets of D.C. during the summer of ‘85, and I think it’s the first M song I ever truly loved.
Is it just a Reagan-era ode to golddigging? I honestly don’t think so. It’s more about knowing your worth and not wasting your time.

This is the only one from the Erotica album that really still sticks with me.
For me, this is a song for rainy days. I like it when Madonna gets pensive and melancholy.
(Doubling up today - I fell asleep during the blackout yesterday)

Justify My Love:
1) Banned by MTV in 1990, yet tame AF nowadays (WAP, etc).
2) The Public Enemy drum sample slaps.
3) Lenny K. helped write it.
4) The Wayne’s World sketch where Madonna admires Garth undulating in a catsuit to it. ‘’Wow, look at the unit on that guy!’’

An extremely catchy bop with themes re. female reproductive autonomy and patriarchal control that I never grasped at the age of, like, 6.
Killer video, too: 80s NYC in its splendor, a hot mechanic BF with a mullet, Danny Aiello is the Preaching Papa, and M’s outfits are 👌🏻.
