Chicago, come see Peter Mountford in conversation with @rebeccamakkai.bsky.social at The Book Cellar *tomorrow*! I loved both of his novels, and I'm excited for his new story collection DETONATOR, now out from @fourwaybooks.bsky.social. www.bookcellarinc.com/peter-mountf...

Democratic members of Congress should probably be made to understand that unless they throw everything they have at this, they are next.
Bondi declares war on the courts: "What has happened to our judiciary is beyond me ... they are deranged ... we are sending a very strong message today ... we will come after you and we will prosecute you. We will find you."

if you are a cis person it costs you nothing to just say today that you see & hear your trans sisters & brothers & others over in the UK today -- and around the world, too, knowing that rulings like today's ripple out in ugly ways.

Democrats, right now you need to be fighting Trump on everything. Big, small, everything. If he wants to pass gas, vote no

we are very much in the Imperial Boomerang stage of American decline so this checks out
you know what this wholesale destruction of the federal bureaucracy reminds me of? “Debaathification!” it reminds me of the immediate aftermath of the Iraq war or rather the beginning of the occupation.

would really love to see more Democrats start talking like this. you're in a fight, act like a fighter.

Could not agree with this more. When my word count goal was super high and I had a day I knew I wouldn't have time to hit it, sometimes I didn't write at all. I don't even use a WC goal anymore, just "do something on the novel," and my work rate has never been higher.
Writers, PLEASE hear me. I've seen so many posts with high word-count goals for days, weeks, months.

If you don't leave room for yourself for the BAD days, the BUSY weeks, you will not make that goal.

Low bar. Cross it every day - but make sure it's a goal you can do even when things are not good.

There is nothing I miss about filmmaking more than when an actor does something unexpected with the script or the blocking, something you’d never think of in ten lifetimes but now you can’t imagine them not doing. You feel like you’re floating. All the best parts of art-making are like this.
so from spending the last year making something let me tell you why AI will never be good:

an actor gives a weird read on a line that you fall in love with

a board artist makes a specific acting or camera angle choice that makes a scene sing

the reason i post so infrequently is that i have no passing thoughts. i think when i am writing, and all the rest of the time, the inside of my brain is just sort of humming in repose. like the inside of a refrigerator

as a prolific teenage shoplifter (personal best was a Thanksgiving turkey tucked under my coat) i feel this acutely
Young people are losing a valuable rite of passage with the increase in digital media and online shopping and the loss of brick & mortar stores: shoplifting. My buddy stole a whole ass PlayStation from Babbages in 6th grade by shoving it down his JNCOs and cemented his status as a legend.
