New addition to my thoughts on 🧪 mentoring. Give trainees a seat at the table. Are you going to a conference where you will speak about their work? Encourage them to attend. Are you going to a meeting to discuss their project with a collaborator or editor? Invite them and ask for their input.

Mentoring is the most important thing most of us can do. Here is a 🧵about what I've learned as a PI running an academic research lab. I hope some of the advice is helpful to those who are just starting their labs and to folks hitting the academic job market in search of an independent position 🧪 1/n

🧪 NEW STUDY: Air pollution increases risk of Lewy Body Dementia, the 2nd most common dementia after Alzheimer’s*

Your reminder that air pollution is just another name for fossil fuel combustion byproducts.

Lewy body dementia promotion by air pollutants
Evidence links air pollution to dementia, yet its role in Lewy body dementia (LBD) remains unclear. In this work, we showed in a cohort of 56.5 million individuals across the United States that fine p...

"If we leave writing to AI chatbots, we won't just lose a craft and the skills. Because writing is more than that. Writing is thinking", argues Giorgio Iemmolo, Director of the Language Centre at ETH and the University of Zurich.

What is your opinion?
Giorgio Iemmolo, is learning possible without writing?
AI chatbots are taking over writing for students and researchers. Linguist Giorgio Iemmolo explains what we are jeopardising in the interest of efficiency gains.

Hot: The state of our environment is not good. But i.a. #RestoreNature the solution. So please, @vonderleyen.ec.europa.eu, @jessikaroswall.ec.europa.eu et al, stop environmental deregulation with #Omnibusses & put forward dedicated #Money4Nature to rewet peatland etc.! cc @birdlifeeurope.bsky.social

New paper by @matthewgoss.bsky.social (along with @hannahskenagy.bsky.social and @coletteheald.bsky.social)! Matthew reexamined a bunch of old* SOA experiments, to get a better handle on the oxidant and RO2 chemistry involved.

Beautiful thread about the function of terpenes for trees!
c0nc0rdance.bsky.social
Ponderosa pine smells like butterscotch.

Go ahead, sniff one the next time you're in the western US. Some say "vanilla", some say "oh no, my nose is covered in sap."

Let's talk about birds, butterscotch, forest fires, blue wood, & boring beetles.

But mostly this thread is about terpenes.
From a blog called "CreationsDawn", a photo of the author smelling a ponderosa pine. The author wears a green cap, light blue-green shirt and red camel pack. They are sniffing a tree with pine bark, with a sort of red-orange color. More trees in the background.

It now appears the Trump administration is going to require government scientists to allow political apparatchiks to review and vet scientific papers before publication to ensure ideological purity. This is gross abuse of the scientific process.
