Mentoring is the most important thing most of us can do. Here is a 🧵about what I've learned as a PI running an academic research lab. I hope some of the advice is helpful to those who are just starting their labs and to folks hitting the academic job market in search of an independent position 🧪 1/n

To the Full Professors out there who actually lift people up, advocate for those with less power and voice, and who care about colleagues and trainees doing well over arbitrary gatekeeping... I see you and am grateful for you.

John Gurdon was a true giant:
- founder of cell reprogramming;
- founder of molecular embryology;
- unabashed advocate for basic research;
- advisor to numerous successful trainees/PIs;
- gentle human that touched so many.
In dark times with science under attack, let his vision be a guiding light.

Very saddened to hear of John Gurdon’s passing. I’ve been lucky enough to interact with him at multiple points through my career - from undergrad lectures, through his position as former Chair of @biologists.bsky.social’s Board of Directors, and as an author at @dev-journal.bsky.social.

Totally - also the way most news outlets grab one short sound bite from his pressers to make him sound semi-coherent is infuriating. If you listen to the entire rambling thought, it's so clear he is completely incoherent.

Very sad news, John Gurdon has died.

A developmental biologist's developmental biologist, Nobel prize winner

His work is the foundation of much of today's dev & stem cell bio.

An inspiration to many, including me. Always asking questions & wanting the answers

GOOD NEWS! Researchers have developed a new mRNA vaccine that has been shown to suppress abnormal blood vessel growth in the retina, offering hope to MILLIONS of patients with age-related vision loss. The vaccine triggered strong antibody responses that REDUCED retinal damage by UP TO 85%.

New addition to my thoughts on 🧪 mentoring. Give trainees a seat at the table. Are you going to a conference where you will speak about their work? Encourage them to attend. Are you going to a meeting to discuss their project with a collaborator or editor? Invite them and ask for their input.

I love these new layers of complexity that people are discovering in the brain! Dendrites of different neurons can connect via nanotubes, which transport calcium and cargo such as amyloid-beta www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Not going to lie - the movie "The Mothman Prophecies" really freaked me out. 👻

It started in the 1960s, when two couples told a harrowing story about being chased by a large flying creature on a rural road. It grew from there — and now 20,000 people come to celebrate Mothman.

There's only one requirement of any of us, and that is to be courageous. Because courage, as you might know, defines all other human behavior. And, I believe - because I've done a little of this myself - pretending to be courageous is just as good as the real thing.
