Yes, THAT Evil Cylon. I'm hunting BEANZ.
Well, my working career has, at the longest, about 8 years left (I'm no spring chicken, coming up on 47 in 2 months) but I'm hoping it's shorter than that. My husband will retire when I do, then we fuckoffski to central OR.

We fortunately bought our house in 2012, at less than half of what it's valued at now.

I'm aiming to retire before 55, because I hate working. I figure I'll just be a ski instructor in the winter so I can justify spending more time on the slopes. Not in California, though.

Basically, to afford a home in OC you'd need a household income of $300,000.
December 11, 2025 at 12:30 AM
Yeah I'm just talking about the the median salary vs the median home price. It's out of hand here in SoCal. I'm where North Orange County and east LA County meet, so I just averaged the home prices between the counties. OC is a touch more expensive.

Okay but why do most of the mid-level product management jobs earn $65k/yr in an area where the median home price is $1m?
December 10, 2025 at 9:27 PM
65000/(70*52)=17.86/hr (that's salary) because no overtime that's why.

However, if working the same hours while on California minimum wage, including overtime:
((16.5*40)+(16.5*30*1.5))/70=$20.04/hr, or $72,930/yr

This is also in an area where the median home price is about $1m.

Assholes.

They also demand FT in the office (that's fine) and to be on calls with the sourcing teams in Hong Kong, SZ, or HCMC several times a week. These calls start late and go for hoooours, so let's say a 70 hour work week on average, on salary.

Now, let's math this out.

He is a complete jerk, arrogant AF, and picks fistfights with people over trivial shit.

At least he's not sexually abusive? I mean, given the state of Hollywood, that's kind of a plus.

Does this mean we also get our 1970s SoCal air quality again? Because that was air you could actually chew on.

It would get so bad that residents were afraid it was a gas attack.

I vaguely recall buying ammo with a boyfriend of mine maaaaany years ago, going out into the desert, and exploding overripe fruit.
December 2, 2025 at 10:29 PM
Maybe I should take up swords. Or archery. Or both. I've already got a good pocket knife collection going. When the apocalypse comes, I want to be ready when everyone runs out of bullets.
December 2, 2025 at 10:28 PM
Guns are more expensive? I can't confirm that. Boots were $300, skis and bindings $400, all the ski clothes I've bought are probably $1500, Ikon pass is $800 yearly, plus lodging at Mammoth when I go... Okay so maybe guns were a cheaper choice.
December 2, 2025 at 4:11 PM
It's probably why I shouldn't, but I wanted to do something moderately dangerous when I turned 40 and it was either that or start a gun collection.
December 2, 2025 at 3:50 PM
Yeah I'm trying to avoid just death in general. Knowing me, I'm just going to fall victim to my own clumsiness and accidentally ski off a cliff or something.

They do, unless you get Animal Fries. Then they're suddenly amazing.

I'm just saying, I can undo my vote at any point. Will I? Well, that all depends on how many cats pics you post, Mr. Scalzi....

*with purchase of any Todd Lambert of equal or lesser value (but yeah, wtf did he do wrong? He seemed pretty innocuous to me)
