i wrote this when i first started transitioning. i was feeling lost and stuck in utah, dreaming of getting back to portland, which i finally did last year

we aren't that different, you and i:

two mossy girls
drying out on the south-side
of a salt pan sign post,
sipping on sunshine and brine,
inhaling our carbon blanket.

we're a long way from home.

i'm sorry i threw you away when you died.

i can barely take care of myself, and
you didn't stand a chance because
we're a long way from home, and
we can't grow here.

i hope they don't do the same to me,

that in some far off, far flung,
distant potentiality yet unsung,
far from dogma and salted earth,
there are two mossy girls
standing in a downpour,
grabbing each other by the toes,
refusing to let go,
one on top of the other,
from then on into forever.

a girl can dream,
can't she?

you can have a little poem, as a treat

the following text is monospace and perfectly aligned into a rectangle, with each line ending with some sort of punctuation:

I came across a well-lit vending machine,
Bright and phosphorescent, and yet empty.
I strained my hand towards my pocket and,
After some struggle, produced something--
The fruit of my labors: A single quarter.
I turned the coin in my hand for a moment
And then gave my offering to the machine.
There was a click as my tithe disappeared
Into the machine and fell--maybe rolled--
Through some unknown kind of machination,
Shepherded through by the natural forces,
And was deposited amongst all the others,
Lost, therefore, to me then, so I waited.
In the dull hum of that luminous machine,
I stood and waited, but nothing happened.
I really do not know what I had expected.

It was then that I noted a second machine
Next to the one I had invested myself in.
This second machine was dark and cloaked,
Imperceptible to me in the other's light,
And yet so unlike the other, it was full.
Bathed in the radiation of my own choice,
Though empty-handed, I noticed something:
Roughly halfway down hung a bag of chips,
Stuck between the glass and some candies.
Upon this discovery, I began to question,
And it occurred to me that I did not know
Which one of the two situations is worse.

also, sort of related, i saw a woman pushing a stroller with one hand and looking at her phone on that tiny ass sidewalk on the other side of cesar chavez, and like bffr dude, you need to be more responsible. the speed limit here is 30mph and it's one of the busiest roads around
