It would be good to reduce the amount of flying that people do. But all of aviation counts for less than 4% of global warming. We could stop flying right now and it wouldn't fix it. We don't have the tech to decarbonize aviation. This feels like another distraction

I really honestly beg you to look outside of the US and realize that soaring housing prices is a global phenomenon
A perverse consequence of the USA's anemic and zoning-constrained housing production is that a strong economy and labor market *increases* homelessness in areas with tight zoning by spurring middle class household formation without increasing supply of houses.
WASHINGTON (AP) — US homelessness, tied to soaring rents and loss of pandemic aid, up 12% to highest level since reporting began in 2007.

With lots of bad drug reporting out there pls find journalists who care enough to report the nuance. Ketamine is both an incredibly safe med, with very limited potential for end organ toxicity, & also something that can cause dissociation to the point that even familiar situations can become unsafe:

Three days since the Aus gov't shared a "preview" with journalists only, but haven't released anything publicly, let alone the full report and data.

This is a really deceptive tactic to direct scrutiny away from gov't failures on fossil fuels. They're obviously hiding something significant.
Hey @adammorton.bsky.social where can I read these projections and all underlying data?

They aren't public on the DCCEEW website. Were they only shared with journalists? And if so, do you know why they're being withheld from public scrutiny?

The most unrealistic scene in Loki is right at the end. A character says they're going to "wait here and let time pass" which is a lovely phrase and scene but you can't do that. You have to pay to pay for your existence. You can't just live for free. Our society quite actively works against that.

When we warn the real threat of AI is how it’s used against people in the present, not the fantasies that some day computers might think for themselves, this is exactly the kind of thing we’re talking about: health insurers using AI to deny care.

Western Australia is like an intense mix between Norway's self-righteousness and the Middle East's authoritarian bloodthirst.

Dropping lies like this is worse than climate denial, and they get credulously repeated across media outlets. Digging up and selling gas causes harm.

Fundamentally, what you need to take away from this - even once we stop hurling these gases into the sky, there will be long-lasting changes - eg, our impact on sea level rise is nearly permanent

It also includes the possibility that the Earth keeps warming for a brief period! But it could cool too

this makes even less sense than carbon credits.
you can't pretend you didn't make a bunch of plastic because someone else picked up some trash. the trash needs to get picked up anyway. there wasn't any there before. none.

we need to quit playing silly number games and actually do something.

I can't wait to have my house turned into an AirBnB for two weeks and then rented to someone else so they can make an extra $10,000

Doesn't this incentivize the wrong thing?

Why is every Labor plan to help people just "we're going to give these rich people money because {convoluted noises}"?

It's a trite point for me to make but truly: it is so deeply fucked that it takes a ruling like this for the Australian government to even muse on the possibility of not locking up those seeking refuge indefinitely.
I cannot stress enough how big this decision is. Al Kateb v Godwin allowed the Australian government to imprison people indefinitely even where they had committed no crime.
