Tech companies are not seriously trying to build sustainable platforms or businesses. We are not the market anymore. Their market is investors and their sole business goal is duping as many gullible investors as they can this quarter.
my 75yo mother told me last night that she’s planning to delete Instagram and Facebook because she’s sick of not being able to tell what’s AI and what’s not, and I genuinely don’t think tech companies have reckoned with this kind of move as an actual possibility

Let’s be clear: if the Palestine Action hunger strikers die, the government will bear moral responsibility | George Monbiot
The three remaining hunger strikers have been convicted of nothing. Yet with astonishing cruelty, ministers refuse to listen to their reasonable demands, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

Trump is a businessman. The skill of business is just amassing money, then throwing money at people for them to do things.

Business activity happens within an established social world. You'd need to use money to build an actual revolution, which businessmen don't even consider a real thing.
I think the Comey situation is a good example of why Yarvin and the tech fascists are upset about the regime. Trump didn’t do the work of properly consolidating power before starting what were supposed to be sham trials for his enemies.

You can’t just skip to the fun part.
The childishness is remarkable. These are not serious people. These weren’t people willing to Do What It Takes. It’s why monarchists like Curtis Yarvin are dooming. badfaithtimes.com/the-leading-...

I guess the kind of people who would send their poorly-conceived ideas to a scientist have always been out there… are LLMs creating more such nuttiness, or giving confidence to the already nutty?

And is it all bad - maybe some conspiracy theorists are being placated by a kindly digital ear 🤷🏻‍♂️
I am by no means a prominent public intellectual, but my inbox is increasingly filled with messages from people who have been convinced by sycophantic chatbots that they have discovered revolutionary theories that entirely upend our scientific understanding of the universe.

And to make this worse, another problem here is that to the non expert, "how plausible and organized something is" is used as a proxy for how correct it is. Absolutely crazy nonsense *presented* in the organized, coherent language of power is at its face more convincing because of its facade.

The content is still obviously delusional to anyone reading it. It’s just organised crazy. But the real danger is the internal effect on the user. The AI provides coherence and validation, stabilising the narrative they’re caught in.

I've written about "disordered counterpublics" groups that reinforce shared delusions Here, the LLM becomes a 1 person counterpublic. It mirrors assumptions, absorbs contradictions, & provides the sense of a responsive, confirming audience.
It is the architecture of disordered discourse, automated.

LLMs give people with delusional belief systems a way to organise those beliefs. The model fills in gaps, supplies connective tissue, and wraps the madness in formal language.
It doesn't make the claims more credible to us, it just tidies them up.

Finally, I know of at least one case where the letter writer, deep into an episode of AI-induced psychosis, asked the LLM why scientists were not responding. The machine suggested that perhaps the scientists were trying to steal his discovery.

This will get someone killed sooner or later.
