Have you ever had to put "death threats" in the Impacts on Progress of Research section of your grant applications? Peers without lived experience of racism who review our work need to understand the extreme contexts we work in without institutional acknowledgement or support.

BREAKING: One of the most important and prominent reporters on the ground in Gaza has been Anas Al Sharif.

He - and several other Al Jazeera journalists - have just been assassinated by Israelis forces whilst in their press tent in central Gaza.

Speechless.
A photo of Anas Al-Sharif and his Al Jazeera colleague Mohammad Qrere in their press bullet proof vests looking at their phones. Both are reported killed. Photo credit to Motassem A Dalloul.

Barely an hour ago, Palestinian journalist Anas Al-Sharif warned us all:

“If this madness doesn’t end, Gaza will be reduced to ruins, its people’s voices silenced, their faces erased — and history will remember you as silent witnesses to a genocide you chose not to stop.”

Israel just killed him.

Thank you to my colleague Dr. Roberto De Vogli and his colleagues for this important call to action for scholars and health professionals. It is impossible to stay silent as a human and as a public health scientist. #publichealth #healthequity #humanrights

In my grief, I neglected to acknowledge that without me asking, Sheila Colla wrote a powerful letter in support of me getting an Adjunct Professor appointment in the Faculty of Environmental and Urban Change at York University. I only learned about it from our friend and colleague Sarah Flicker ❤️

When I started researching wild bees, Sheila consistently offered advice. If I needed to vent about academic colleagues, I could count on her for a listening ear (& appropriate amount of justified anger!). When choosing between what is easy & what is right, I often think about what Sheila would do.

Sheila was a remarkable friend, colleague, mentor, neighbour, and mother, who gave so much to all of her communities. I looked up to her immensely as a colleague who thought deeply about the way we do science and who we include and uphold. She will be deeply missed. www.gofundme.com/f/support-sh...

The conservation science community lost an amazing soul--Dr. Sheila Colla, the leading expert on wild bees and wild-domestic bee interactions in North America. Sheila was a tremendous advocate for nature and environmental justice. 🧪

And I know that the impact she had on me was just a fraction of the impact she had on the people in her life and so many more beyond them. My heart breaks for all her loved ones, and especially for her husband Mark, and kids Tristan and Rowan.

I feel so fortunate to have met her 9 years ago, when she co-founded East Enders Against Racism in response to white supremacist posters at Stan Wadlow Park in East York. It was healing to have the opportunity to collaborate on such a response to racism in a park and community I grew up in.

That meant the world during the rocky transition when I asked myself daily “What have I done?” She was also the friend who eased my transition to my York postdoc, taking it upon herself to welcome me to the Faculty of Environmental & Urban Change complete with a tour & access to the faculty lounge.

I’m not ready to talk about Dr. Sheila Colla @savewildbees.bsky.social in the past tense. Her presence and voice are so vivid in my mind. She was the friend who stayed in closest touch with me when I moved from Toronto to Victoria, chatting with me as if I had never left.

Alberta is failing on public health.

In week 24 of the year- also known as epidemiological week-, we accounted for 125 of Canada’s 221 new measles cases.

That is more than half.

We have the expertise to do better, but the UCP government is weakening our public health system.
