As the year draws to a close, I’m signing off 2025 with a magical find!

An ancient amber bear. Carved some 10,000 years ago, it washed up on a beach at Fanø, Denmark, from a submerged Mesolithic settlement in the North Sea.

My photo shows a small figurine of an amber bear carved some 10,000 years ago during the Danish Mesolithic period. The bear is seen in profile facing right. The legs are incomplete. The ears, muzzle, and mouth are defined. The figurine is displayed on a small metal stand. The display lighting shines on the bear’s head and neck enhancing the translucence of the orange amber. The neck of the bear has a polished groove indicating it was once suspended on a cord or string. Length 6.5cm. The Fanø bear was found in 1991 on a beach on the west coast of the Danish island of Fanø, located off the south-western coast of Jutland. In the Stone Age the Danish coastline was different from today. “Since then the coastline has been influenced by later changes to the sea level as well as the rising up of the land after the last Ice Age. This rising of the land is still going on today. North of a line on the map the land has risen up and south of the line the coast has become submerged because of the subsequent rise in sea level. Therefore a proportion of Stone Age settlements south of the “tilt line” now lie under water or at the edge of the beach. Thus objects can be washed out in the sea and later be found on the beach”. The Fanø bear is one of a small number of amber bear figurines from the Baltic Sea region which have been assigned to the Mesolithic period by means of a typo-chronological approach Amber has many amazing properties: it’s warm to the touch, it’s a glossy translucent colour when polished, it gives off a fragrant scent when burnt, and when rubbed against fur or hair it can produce static electricity which ‘magically’ emits green sparks in the dark and can make hair stand on end.

Acrylic - 9” x 6”

This piece of mat board was used as a palette while working on the cover for Brandon Sanderson’s WORDS OF RADIANCE. Half of the scrap was turquoise while the rest was reds and oranges. Random brushstrokes suggested the figure that I painted in. 1/2
A woman rendered in limited color leaps with one raised knee up, posed against a starscape of cool tones. There is pink skin tone to her lead arm but the rest of her is cast in subtle lavender and blue green. Her arm is positioned vertically, trailing dots of lavender, red, and blue across the top edge of the panel as if in the act of cosmic creation. Gold accents cross her forehead and dangle in a long chain of baubles that include a crescent. A dove spreads its wings in profile facing left at her hip. The hem of her dress ends in an abstract curl of fabric rendered more simplistically than the rest of her. Red orange dominates the lower left, creating a contrast of warm versus cool. The smaller orb of a star shines behind a sliver of crescent moon illuminating just the edge.

Beautiful blue glass beads from the late Bronze Age 💙

Ploughed up by a farmer in Denmark in 1885, analysis shows the beads were made in Mesopotamia, pointing to long-distance trade in luxury goods some 3,000 years ago.

The image shows fourty-four annular (ring-shaped) translucent turquoise blue glass beads strung on a modern circular thread and displayed against a black background. The glass beads were found in 1885 when a farmer ploughed up a cremation urn at Kongehøj in Denmark. The urn broke and was found to contain burnt bones, the 44 blue glass beads and two gold spiral rings. Recent analysis shows the beads were made in Mesopotamia (present-day Iraq), indicating far-reaching trade in luxury goods some 3,000 years ago.

a small ceramic animal held in my hand. it has a gentle yet exuberant smile, round shiny black eyes, a snout with no nose or teeth and tall rabbit-like ears. it has pink accents on its white face and a soft-edged light red upperside to its body, with white spots. its feet and underside are white. the same ceramic animal from a 3/4 view, standing on an aged wooden table. its head is tilted upwards, looking off to the left, and its front foot is lifted from the ground as if walking. its red upperside with mushroom-like white spot markings can be seen to cover its back and neck, the backs of its ears, and part of its tail. it has simple rounded nub legs and a loosely canine build. the same ceramic animal from above. it peers up at the viewer as if excited to see them. its shortish tail is somewhat feline in nature. the same ceramic animal standing on a garden rock wall in bright sunshine. there are plants and purple flowers behind it, and seeing its snout front-on shows that, despite its lack of discernible nose, it has a slight ":3" lip, like a cat, dog or ball python. its raised forelimb seems like it might be frolicking, and its short tail trails behind it.

Not had time for a new holiday piece but I still really like this wintry 1800s butchfemme couple that I never shared here.

From c. 3,600 years ago, an ancient Egyptian bead in the form of a hedgehog curled-up in a ball! 🦔❤️

My photo shows a blue spherical bead in the form of a hedgehog curled up in a defensive ball displayed on a grey background. It is made of Egyptian faience, a ceramic material with a shiny blue glaze. The hedgehog’s face, ears, feet and tail are shown in relief, and the quills are represented by black dots painted over the surface of the bead. A hole for threading runs through the sphere - it can just be seen on the right hand side of the bead. The hedgehog’s long ears suggest this is a desert hedgehog. Desert hedgehogs may have symbolized rebirth because they reappear after hibernating underground in winter. Dated c.1985 - 1650 BC. On display at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh.

Bee-autifully crafted gold ornament in the form of a little bee 🐝 ❤️

It has a round head with two large circular eyes. The body is elongated tapering to a point. An almond-shaped wing extends diagonally downward on each side of the body. The body is decorated with rows of tiny raised granules (gold balls) and thin bands, creating a striped abdomen. The wings are outlined with granules and the inner wing is smooth. Length 1.9 centimetres. From Minoan Crete circa 1700-1600 BC.

My photo shows a small Roman flask made of translucent cobalt blue glass in the form of a fat little mouse, 14.6 cm in length. The body of the vessel is rounded and stands on four feet made from tooled trails of glass. A separate blob of glass forms the head with eyes, ears, and a pointed nose. The neck of the flask is funnel-shaped and slightly up-turned to look like a tail. The flask surface is decorated with trails of glass which have been flattened and notched. Modern scholars refer to this type of trailed decoration as ‘snake thread’. On display at the Met Museum in New York
