Conor Shaw. Born and raised in DC. Husband, father, cyclist, urbanist, and recovering attorney. Former Eckington Civic Assn. president; now fighting for all of Ward 5.
Minor injuries sustained in vehicle crashes, which had been flat or slightly up from 2020 through 2024 are at their lowest point since 2017 and are 32% below pre-pandemic levels.

In 2025, DC lost 25 souls to vehicle crashes, which while far too high, represents a 13-year low. Perhaps more significantly, the number of major injuries and fatalities (a larger and therefore less noisy n) has dropped 34% since 2017 (the first year that detailed crash data is available).

You seem to be correct

It's not that much more far fetched than the original scoping for the west side alignment!

Can you resign from a job you never had?

Next best opportunity to make that less of a shitshow.

These impacts are not unusual. Here are the results from the Pennsylvania Avenue project, which introduced rush hour bus lanes and curbside bike lanes. Very similar story: massive reduction in crashes, increase in ped and bike traffic, and reductions in vehicle travel times.

DDOT continues to publish before/after analyses of safety projects. The numbers for the 9th street NW bike lanes suggest that we should be doing these projects everywhere we can. Crashes plummeted, pedestrian and bike traffic skyrocketed, and vehicle travel times dropped.

Today’s reporting reminds me of this recent picture from right outside one of our local high schools. We’re seeing a lot of youth use bikeshare to get to school these days—and in case you missed it, DC’s school attendance crisis is currently grave. Maybe we should be encouraging this!

Very excited for this @ward5familybiking.bsky.social Halloween bike ride and planting party in collaboration with another Ward 5 gem: Friends of the National Arboretum! Mark your calendars for October 25!!

Important paper from @rycalder.bsky.social, Rachel Clark, and Claire Summa analyzing 2019-2023 trauma data from DC traffic crashes. They found that injury rates *increased* and that racial disparities exist *for every user type* including pedestrians & cyclists. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/41014831/

I see that the VERY SERIOUS people trying to persuade more Americans to have children are now telling women they shouldn’t use a safe painkiller during pregnancy.

Total crashes resulting in either fatalities or major injuries was arguably flat from 2017 to 2021 but been dropping since then.

Detailed information about injury crashes on our vision zero dashboard only goes back to 2017. Using that year as a baseline, fatalities are down 27%, major injuries are down 32%, and minor injuries are down 31%. visionzero.dc.gov/pages/crash-...

If I had an ANC email account, I would probably tell the national guard to google National Park Service parcels in the District if they want to know where there is deferred maintenance. www.nps.gov/locations/dc...

To be clear, riding a bike on a sidewalk is not a crime and is not even a civil infraction outside of the central business district!

My hottest take from the front lines of fascism is that the Beanie’s Feta sammy at Bub and Pop’s (newly in Ward 5 and MBT adjacent) is easily one of the best sandwiches I have ever had.

New poster child for the federal surge: dude with one hand in his pocket (Alanis would be proud), slouching against a storefront. Must be great to serve in the FBI or Secret Service and be told your job is loitering!

Something like this.

Zoning record is a mess because there have been several related cases filed over the years, but at quick glance, it looks like ART improvements are on the menu.

That's what section 740 of the Home Rule Act allows. It does **not** allow the president to "federalize" MPD. That is a term folks are borrowing from the state national guard statute that appears nowhere in the Home Rule Act. dccouncil.gov/wp-content/u...
August 11, 2025 at 7:57 PM
Important to be precise here. The home rule act doesn't allow MPD to be put under federal control. It allows the president to "direct the Mayor to provide him, and the Mayor shall provide, such services of the Metropolitan Police force as the President may deem necessary and appropriate."
