I've said it before, but it's just incredibly exciting to see movement here. We still have more work to do to activate other vacant spaces near the Florida/North Cap intersection.
The Bates Area Civic Association Instagram account reported yesterday on the site preparation now underway at the DC DHCD / Mi Casa Barnett-Aden affordable housing project at 10 Q St NW www.instagram.com/batesareaciv...

A heck of a chart: in every single one of the 10 major US cities that built the most housing between 2017 and 2023, rents for older, existing units fell—often by quite a bit.

Keep this in mind when people claim cars mean business — closing Central #Madrid to cars over holidays resulted in a 9.5% boost in retail spending on its main shopping street: STUDY.

There was also a 71% drop in air pollution.

In 2025, DC lost 25 souls to vehicle crashes, which while far too high, represents a 13-year low. Perhaps more significantly, the number of major injuries and fatalities (a larger and therefore less noisy n) has dropped 34% since 2017 (the first year that detailed crash data is available).

“The groups” is Congress and the President: 23 U.S.C. 217(e) says they have to add ped/bike facilities (but can get waived for cost). It’s been law for awhile.

No law says they have to double the lane capacity of bridge.
Adding a pedestrian lane to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge at a cost of $1 billion as a treat for cycling organizations is a concise illustration of how the groups drive up infrastructure costs
Maryland set to nearly double the size of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge
After years of discussion, Maryland is moving forward with a plan to put eight lanes of traffic on the long span.

Good.
NEW: DC and 34 states secured a settlement with Hyundai and Kia for selling cars that lacked critical, industry-standard, anti-theft technology.

This failure contributed to a surge in car thefts across DC.

Now, over 8,100 Hyundai and Kia car owners in DC can get free anti-theft hardware installed.

There are also plenty of opportunities to create some additional north/south protected bike facilities to reduce the MBT's load!

Great options include First Street NW, Lincoln Rd. NE, 4th Street NE, Brentwood/13th NE, Montana/18th, NE., Bladensburg NE., and Eastern.
The MBT is almost a victim of its own success at this point - the segment from Edgewood to NoMa is often packed, and conflicts between mixed pedestrian and cycling users are common.

If there was more space to widen the trail, the cyclists and pedestrians should really be separated.
"the agency’s in-house research team, is piloting two speed feedback signs at high-congestion points on the MBT"

DDOT saw >5,000 users/day in October, and "that one out of five of those users travelled more than 15 miles per hour during that period" aashtojournal.transportation.org/ddot-starts-...

DDOT continues to publish before/after analyses of safety projects. The numbers for the 9th street NW bike lanes suggest that we should be doing these projects everywhere we can. Crashes plummeted, pedestrian and bike traffic skyrocketed, and vehicle travel times dropped.

Almost half the Waymos on California streets are driving around empty. They're either waiting for the next customer or en route for a pickup.

If robotaxis scale, anything close to that level of deadheading would create crushing gridlock.

A mockery of justice. The US Attorney should be sanctioned by the court and disbarred for this.
NEWS: During a hearing in federal court in VA, prosecutors confirmed that the operative indictment in the case against James Comey was never shown to or voted on by the entire grand jury before it was presented in open court.

Defense counsel argued that’s a complete bar to further prosecution

Today’s reporting reminds me of this recent picture from right outside one of our local high schools. We’re seeing a lot of youth use bikeshare to get to school these days—and in case you missed it, DC’s school attendance crisis is currently grave. Maybe we should be encouraging this!
