also life update: a lot happened in Sept…

I defended my dissertation, and got to share all the exciting things we’ve learned about small southeastern streams!

I also started as a postdoc at Oregon State! i’m stoked to work with @wardhydro.bsky.social on the role headwaters play in downstream WQ!

I'm incredible excited to share that @thatsmedelp.bsky.social successfully defended her PhD last week. Delaney's dissertation focused on hydrologic connectivity of headwater systems across the southeastern US (i.e., "Headwaters and their hollows.") #RollTide #BamaEcoHydro

Hurricane Helene caused catastrophic damage throughout Appalachia, including North Carolina, Tennessee and Georgia. And during a disaster like that, fast decision making is important. [1/3]

Flood waves like those that devastated Texas last week can be seen by the NASA #SWOT satellite. Another reason to support #NASA Earth Science

Hydrologists! Ever heard of a Spatial Hydrograph? Our new paper in @agu.org GRL shows that the SWOT satellite can capture spatial flow waves propagating down rivers—something previously only only observable at river gauges: doi.org/10.1029/2024...

Example of how the Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) satellite's water surface elevation measurements can be used to record flow wave propagation over space and generate a “spatial hydrograph.”

Big CONGRATS to @morejam59.bsky.social for successfully defending her MS thesis today on groundwater and surface water connectivity in headwater wetlands!!!

Jasmine is headed to Boise State this fall to pursue a PhD in Hydrology.

Grades submitted.

What a wild year! I'm grateful for my students, our collaborators, and the larger hydrologic science community. I'm also grateful for the meaningful work we're doing and everything we've been able to accomplish together.

Keep up the good fight y'all, and Cheers!

“This budget is a recipe for ending the US' leadership in science. It would do generational damage by forcing labs to shut down, with a corresponding loss of highly trained individuals and one-of-a-kind research materials.”

Happy International #Beaver Day!

Do you have a question about beavers, their wetlands, or how they relate to climate change? Ask it here!

I’ll be sharing bits of beaver knowledge throughout the day, and if there is a question I *don’t* know the answer to, I will know who to ask to get it!
