🚀 Want to meet the Paris Agreement goals? Reducing energy demand in buildings & transport is key!

🔎 Our latest study quantifies how demand-side strategies complement low-carbon supply-side solutions.

Nice paper by my former colleague @yannquilcaille.bsky.social:
each of the 180 historical world’s largest oil, gas, coal, and cement producers are at least responsible for 16 heatwaves "that would have been virtually impossible in a preindustrial climate"

#IPCC's 2022 #ClimateReport shows heatwaves in Europe will become more frequent, more intense & will last longer.

By 2050, about half of the European population may be exposed to high or very high risk of heat stress during summer.

Cities are hot today in Europe!

Besides, there is also the "growth-vs-environment" hot topic at the urban scale you can discover

Prototypes of Lornauto were sold 20k euros

Production on a larger scale would have lowered the price and made electric vehicles more affordable for less well-off households.

Retrofiting cars towards electric vehicles could allow for a 70% savings of material inputs in car manufacturing
➡️ less steel production = less CO2 emissions and less energy consumed

Carbon footprint of animal VS vegetal protein meals
In one graphic
ourworldindata.org
If you want to reduce the carbon footprint of your diet, less meat is nearly always better than sustainable meat.
A graph comparing the greenhouse gas emissions of various protein-rich foods, measured in kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalents (kgCO2 eq) per 100 grams of protein. The chart features colorful curves representing different food items, with the height of each curve indicating the level of emissions associated with its production.

The bottom line is that plant-based protein sources still have a lower footprint than the lowest-impact meat products.

Sources are credited to Joseph Poore and Thomas Nemecek (2018) for the data and Our World in Data for the visualization

Quick calculation by my collegue Houssein Guimbard at @cepii-paris.bsky.social : average US tariffs are larger today than they were yesterday (=increase on China more than compensate decreases on other countries).

For other countries tariff levels remain high (25% auto/steel/alu still implemented).

With global warming closing in on 1.5C, one aspect is clear: some countries' emissions have exceeded their fair share.

To deal with this, we present the concept of carbon debt in a new paper in @pnas.org.

We examine a forward-looking measure to guide collective efforts in the era of climate overshoot: net-zero carbon debt.

Storytelling is a way to explore possible/desirable futures in social and climate science, such as in the Shared Socioeconomic Pathways.

Just finished this book by Christian Arnsperger!

Interesting to think about economic fundamentals from an existentialist angle: how fear and denial of being finite beings are distributed throughout the economic system and perpetuate it.
florianleblanc.bsky.social
Agreed!
AR7 will need to be more representative of SSPs
But not only: scenarios with increase GDP convergence between South and North are also welcomed
glenpeters.bsky.social
Around 90% of the scenarios assessed in IPCC AR6 were based on one set of socioeconomic assumptions (SSP2).

This is based on the metadata variable SSP_family, for scenarios that passed vetting and obtained a climate assessment.
