Congratulations to John Clarke, Michel Devoret, and John Martinis for winning this year's #nobelprize in physics. Cooling a piece of metal (an electrical circuit) to the lowest temperatures, they made it behave in a bizarre way, where the entire circuit exhibits quantum effects.
Nowadays this […]

If we were to do a regular online Fediverse meeting —

(Maybe once a month.)

WHAT DAYS OF THE WEEK WOULD YOU BE ABLE TO ATTEND?

A regular (online) meeting for Fediverse developers, for those who care about the Fediverse as a social movement, and for those who care about the success of the […]

Scientific discovery relies on a cycle of observations, analysis, and coming up with new hypotheses. Can a computer mimic that cycle and explore an unknown system in this way?

We introduce #sciexplorer, which for the first time employs agentic behaviour in […]

@hashraydamon @MPI_ScienceOfLight @maxplanckgesellschaft It's a sphere, half of which is painted with some special black color, and viewed from an angle such that only the black hemisphere shows. It is quite interesting!

Spektren (wie hier von einer Natriumflamme) waren entscheidend für die Entwicklung der #quantenmechanik. Niels Bohr fand 1913 seine Theorie des Wasserstoffatoms, um die Frequenzen der Linien zu deuten. Beim
Versuch, die Intensitäten der Linien zu verstehen […]

Machines have been better at chess than humans for some time. A motorcycle can move much faster than a human can run

Yet we are perfectly good at training for those activities in the context of competition, and we think the skills they build are useful

We can do that with writing and math, too

Are there some scientists who calmly and peacefully brainstorm, do their experiments, etc., or do you all also get dragged into like 15 directions at once on any given day?

I would say this is not sustainable, but it has been a decade now, so I guess it turns out to be sustainable ?
