Adventurers descend where no-one has descended before, into 'The Maracot Deep', where they encounter monstrous crustaceans, bizarre fish and millions of plastic microbeads (alright, I made that bit up). From the serialisation in The Strand, 1927, of Arthur Conan Doyle's novel.

A monster lobster attacks a diving bell while a weird-looking fish swims away.

An enormous scary tree in an illustration by Nikolai Vorobiev for a 1970s book on Russian folk tales. I'm embarrassed that I know nothing about the story because it looks cool. However, the picture seemed ideal for #ThickTrunkTuesday.

A gigantic tree with eyes waves claw-like branches menacingly as a knight on horseback, dwarfed by its size, prepares to fire an arrow. Crows are flying around.

Kang Nang (傒囊) is a haunting presence in Chinese folklore, a mountain-dwelling creature that looks like a child. When spotted, it silently extends its hand, inviting you closer. But beware: if you grasp its hand and lead it away from where it stands, it dies. 1/2

I do wonder what Nael is up to these days and if he knows how feted his poem has become.

Every working, professional poet in the world today would give their right arm for one of their poems to have had the exposure and impact that this six year-old's has had over the years.

Today's animal theme for #BookWormSat wouldn't be complete without Nael's classic poem 'The Tiger' 🐅

Today on the BBC Archive youtubes, I have mostly been watching THE GHOST HUNTERS from 1975.

Strange goings on, indeed. Benson Herbert is a one.

Lucky, I'd love to find a copy for myself. Have you read it yet?

Joan Forman is probably my favourite writer of true ghost story books. I read this one last year, but I'd forgotten this one about the peculiar bubble figures.

4) DALLINGTON CHURCH
Northamptonshire, 1907. Two girls out for a walk enter the church. Inside, they are terrified to see the place full of kneeling people who seemed "to be made of a substance similar to bubbles". No explanation has ever been offered, and the apparition never reoccurred

I went searching for the cover artwork and found that @memizon.bsky.social posted it on Twitter a few years ago.
Front cover of 'Spookerisms: 25 weird and eerie happenings easily re-told as one's own experiences' by Elliott O'Donnell. Above the title and description on the cover is a bevy of traditional white sheet draped ghosts.

1/3 According to a Flemish folktale, bokkenrijders or buckriders, who were said to be thieves, ghosts, or sometimes even witches, and rode through the sky on the backs of goats in Flanders and the Netherlands, had stolen the Queen's laundry.

Art from Affiche: "De Bokkenrijder of het skelet." Opdrachtgever: Het Hollandsch Tooneel. Shows a buckrider riding through the sky. Castle in the far distance. Clouds.

And here's the cover of the 1949 Rider & Co. Ltd edition, another wonderful artwork.
Front cover art of 'Haunted Britain' by Elliott O'Donnell, depicting a swirling cloud in which menacing figures with bright red eyes and mouths are visible in the swirls. Less distinct are a coach and horses and a horse rider with antlers. Occasional gaps in the cloud reveal the walls of a ruined house, a manor house, and a tree. On the books spine is another cloudy figure and a crossroads.
