I don’t know if this is true since I didn’t see it happen, but are ICE agents afraid of a person in a frog costume? Who is dancing? I don’t understand.

Also I think not all students cry tears of joy over their physics textbooks…present company excepted of course😉

It was a broad survey and they weren’t looking for that specifically, so it is all in very general terms. Another correlation with higher scores in college physics was having a high school physics teacher who was “described with average friendliness or LESS” (emphasis mine)

(At the time, regents physics used a left hand rule. I was so angry about being taught wrong!)
fpoodry.bsky.social
Besides which, textbooks might include things one is not taught. In the 1980’ I took New York State Regents Physics, which used the direction of electron flow for current. I liked physics and went to the library to learn more, and learned about conventional current and the RIGHT hand rule!

It is hard to recommend a book one hasn’t read. Most physics textbooks I had the “pleasure” of reading were not particularly recommendable, and it’s hard to read enough textbooks to feel comfortable recommending them.
fpoodry.bsky.social
I used the textbook for problem sets in AP Physics, and I handed out but didn’t use Hewitt with my conceptual classes.
Also, I taught using Modeling Instruction starting in 1997 which is non-textbook-centric (except for propping up ramps, as Dan mentioned)

In 2001, Sadler and Tai’s paper “Success in Introductory College Physics: The Role of High School Preparation” noted that a variable that seemed to correlate to higher grades in college physics was “using no textbook at all or reading it less.” #ITeachPhysics

if these companies would just put out a statement saying “we told him to go fuck himself” they would instantly have the type of loyal and dedicated customer base corporations dream of and spend decades trying to cultivate

Heard from a friend at Disney+ that there are multiple levels of freakout internally, both from internal dissatisfaction, concerns about subscription cancelations, and of course the big one: concern about a boycott spilling over into parks and cruises.

Just show up. Don‘t register.

This is a book series that serves as a comfort series much like Leverage is my comfort tv series. I've read all of the books at least 10 times in the last 30 years. And only now, after reading this article, do I see the trans connection. I just never put two and two together until now.

In the '80s and '90s, CJ Cherryh questioned and critiqued our assumptions about how gender is expressed and understood, creating science fiction narratives that reflect trans identity and experience. It's time for a retrospective.

This is #TheDoubleTax. The compounded cost of racism and sexism Karen is facing will come at the cost of the TRUTH being widely disseminated.

I stand with Karen and I hope you read #TheDoubleTax to understand how intentional the assault on Black women in leadership is. Preorder: annagifty.com.

This is really important. And the conviction of Erin Patterson for deliberately serving family members death cap mushrooms (Amanita phalloides) is a case study in good forensic science.

That Australian woman who was sentenced for putting death-cap mushrooms in her family's beef Wellington?

Her conviction was helped by the scientific evidence in the world's herbaria -- which themselves are being closed (rapidly and worryingly) around the world. therevelator.org/endangered-h...
