A colleague at Stanford’s business school used The Stanford Daily to argue—poorly—against DEI. The piece was riddled with historical errors and left one searching for fact, so I broke my public writing hiatus to respond.

I hope you’ll read and share the piece.

What DEI threatens isn’t merit. It’s monopoly.
Political science professor Hakeem Jefferson argues for DEI's importance to de-monopolizing universities.

Obviously things have got dramatically worse in the US recently, and I don't want to diminish that, but I've been at *so many* conferences in the UK on topics like empire, humanitarianism and development where multiple speakers from the Global South have been denied visas or held at the border
I just attended a conference in the US. We had one speaker detained and two others turned away at the border.
There are great conferences and science in the US, but with the way things are right now, it’s too risky to attend.

So the most British clergyman (and proto-academic) ever, our man John doesn't abandon his History of Northumberland. He's sitting on evidence that will change a key part of British history, but nope! Out of scope.

So what does he do? He footnotes it. A 173 PAGE LONG FOOTNOTE. 13/22

I think a big problem is that we seek to understand racism and bigotry rather than confront it.

Me I'm a bit over "seeking to understand" because it's just normalised it all

Some people reading this the wrong way, so let me be clear: the liberation of the prisons is not a sufficient proof for HTS's good intentions or transformed nature.
That should not stand in the way of standing in solidarity with people - ordinary people - who have been oppressed so cruelly.

When will they take some fucking responsibility for the fact that civil service can only deliver what Ministers decide?!

The inaction of the past 4-5 months lies at the feet of ministers , to join the right wing populist horse shit of scapegoating those of us who can't talk back is pathetic

Disappointing for #safc to lose ground over the last few games when they deserved more from the games. Big test tonight, another draw would be (this time) a canny outcome.

This this, a thousands times this. And alas utterly predictable from well before the election that starmer and reeves would not have the gumption (or the will) to effect the required change. Alas it will not only lead to a loss in 29, but a high risk of a swing to the far right
1. The implicit deal behind Starmerism was this: you might not like what he stands for (or fails to stand for), but at least he knows how to win elections. If you want the Tories out, he’s your only hope.
But now? It’s as if he’s going out of his way to lose in 2029. 🧵

After some important interactions on here today, it strikes me that the primary people we should all be consulting on the subject of assisted dying are those currently living with life limiting conditions / terminal illnesses.

Several individuals have told me they feel completely ignored.
