anybody know what the stateside equivalent of canadian icing sugar is? is it just confectioner's sugar?

Yes, you do want to make these with real butter. I use unsalted butter for these. So the whipped part is: using a hand mixer, beat the butter & add in the icing sugar, then the flour. (I will also add the recipe to a separate post.)
