A friend in Minneapolis just sent me this video. Looks like thousands have come together for a vigil after an ICE agent shot and killed 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good. This was my neighborhood for several years before coming to Portland.

The US has attacked a country, kidnapped its head of state, and is seizing its oil. Trump has invoked the Monroe Doctrine.

This is a moment for Canada to stand up: condemn this act of imperialism. Reject impunity and the politics of brute force.

On the "boots on the ground" question and Trump saying that it will mainly be about protecting oil operations.

Given this framing, we should expect a massive payday for politically connected mercenary companies, who will use this to expand their private armies.

Russia just bombed the main highway leading into Kharkiv - heavy traffic with families returning home after Christmas - cars are burning with people in them.

And we discuss signing something with them?

Put bluntly, why does Ukraine matter?

If the aggressor prevails, we return to a world where “might makes right”—something we haven’t lived in for decades.

Others are already watching. In that case, international law, starting with the UN Charter, becomes as ineffective as the Budapest Memorandum

I’m talking to Canadian radio audiences this morning about the latest in the Russo-Ukrainian war and from the hosts’ shocked reaction, I’m realizing that few have heard about the Ru army’s « human safari » campaign in Kherson. More attn is needed. www.chathamhouse.org/publications...
A ‘human safari’: The Russian drones targeting Ukraine’s civilians
Ukrainians on the frontline in Kherson tell Olga Tokariuk how they withstand daily enemy attacks – by sheltering under trees, staying indoors on clear days and with netting over the roads.

It’s been two weeks since ICE took Yuanxin Zheng from his father. He is six years old. He’s still not home. This has to end.

Westerners are lucky to have never lived under Ru occupation so they don't fear it. They imagine it as a distant, theoretical limit that doesn't affect individuals' lives. The leftists imagine it can't be worse than living in/under the American empire. In reality...

Last week, ICE arrested and separated a father and son after a routine check-in. Six-year-old Yuanxin had just enrolled in the first grade at an elementary school in Astoria. Now he's in custody, alone. ICE won't say where. This cruelty serves no one. It must end.

This book has been so soothing. I have probably learned more about the foreign policies that shape the world just in the first three chapters than I have in at least the last 15 years of news media. 🙃 It's helped clarify a lot of the absolutely batshit nonsense of the current timeline. COMFORT READ

We are in a bizarre moment of diplomatic history. The purported "peace plan" that appeared a few days ago beings in Russian unreality and American weakness. Demanding everything of Ukraine and nothing of Russia, its purpose is imperialism and profiteering.

My position is clear: I am unequivocally opposed to any new fossil fuel development — including LNG.

We must have the courage to say this to every government, of any stripe: if you’re building new pipelines or fossil infrastructure, this shall not pass.

We hear that Putin and Trump (or their emissaries) have been secretly consulting about a settlement to the war. Given the inherent traps of allowing an aggressor to decide the outcome of his war, I try here to give a sense of how negotiations might actually work.
