Why are other insects commonly found on oak galls?

The gall wasp not only manipulates the physical growth, but some can manipulate the vascular system to emit a sugary liquid, attracting other insects to feed, and defend, the baby wasp inside. #biodiversity #mutualism

19. Poplar spiral gall in a black poplar leaf stalk.

These are twisty little galls caused by an aphid that induces formation of a short corkscrew of distended leaf stem.

I'm more familiar with wasp galls on oak. So I I thought this aphid gall was very curious.

This is oak marble #gall. Sort of 'tumor' of oak buds caused by #wasp Andricus kollari, whose larvae develop within. Hugely important both economically and culturally: source of iron gall ink, standard handwriting ink in Europe from Roman times until century ago! Near Lincoln, Lincolnshire, England.

What do you think we've found here – a weird fungus perhaps? Nature's early Christmas baubles? 👀

These colourful beauties are actually cherry wasp 'galls' – growths on the leaves caused by cherry gall wasp larvae! 🐝

Have you ever seen a wasp gall before? Let us know down below! 👇

Spangles! These very cool common spangle galls were on a large number of the fallen oak leaves we saw beside Loch Lomond last week. Produced by the common spangle gall wasp, each houses a tiny larvae that will emerge in spring

An old Hop Gall on this Oak caused by the asexual generation of the gall wasp Andricus foecundatrix. I expect the inner gall fell out in the summer and a wasp of the sexual generation will emerge from that next Spring.

This morning I went on a quick walk to Catton Park to see a scarce gall on a young Oak tree caused by the agamic (asexual) generation of the gall wasp Andricus lucidus. It had been found there recently by @susanweeks.bsky.social . This gall has lots of uniformly thin 'spines' with rounded tips.
