Hey! Public opinion changing over the course of a year in response to real world events, Trump administration atrocities, and leadership from a few in the opposition! Who woulda thunk it possible? Next they’ll be saying the opposition doesn’t ALWAYS have to assume the position of a defensive crouch!
Wow — New YouGov / Economist poll:

46% support abolishing ICE
43% oppose abolishing ICE

This is the first time that abolishing ICE has received net positive support

we don't have nearly enough progressives fighting hard for the kinds of policy changes that support families. Universal free childcare, UBI, universal parental leave. We leave it to the conservatives to discuss and then the conversation becomes a very different and much more condescending one
it frankly is kind of taboo to discuss these questions on the left, but this piece also doesn't get into the actual most promising policy ideas (limiting smartphone and social media use to the greatest possible extent) www.npr.org/2026/01/12/n...
As birthrates tumble, some progressives say the left needs to offer ideas and solutions
The US and other countries face aging, shrinking populations. Conservatives have shaped debate over the issue. Some liberals say it's time for progressives to weigh in.

So when authorities say “she tried to run over an officer,” that is not a neutral description. It is a claim of intent that can be used to justify lethal force after the fact.

When the state kills first and invents the threat afterward, it is not policing, it is death squad behavior. /end

this would be highly relevant if the republicans cared about the truth
🧵In my expert opinion as a researcher of vehicle ramming attacks, what has been publicly described in the video evidence does not support the claim that Renee Nicole Good was attempting a deliberate ramming attack when she was shot in Minneapolis on January 7, 2026. 1/7

this is hilarious because it directly mirrors medieval history

the church condemned (most of) the teachings of Aristotle - student of Plato - as heretical in the 13th century

Shigeru Mizuki's THE DEFINITIVE YOKAI FIELD GUIDE is coming to English this April!

The was a personal request by Mizuki to have translated--the last such request he made. He felt it was the culmination of his work as an educator on Yokai.

this is a brilliant observation that might even be taken a step further: *only* the ignorant are able to perceive the truth.

expertise is seen as shackling one to the realm of accepted knowledge, which by virtue of not explaining everything completely is seen as false

it is a gnostic ignorance
An essential development over the past decade-plus is that the ignorant went from feeling chastened when their ignorance was revealed to banding together and deciding that, actually, they were right. They might disagree at times, but they agreed that ignorance itself was an indicator of trust.

For my newsletter, I took a deeper look at the electoral record of WelcomePAC, a centrist group that produced that 352 page document advising Democrats to moderate once again.

Turns out the campaigns they work for aren't winning. www.burnsnotice.com/fire-the-con...

i think the republicans have invented a fluid reality bubble somehow, wherein reality adjusts like elastic and the past becomes a distant blur with only now mattering

it is almost transcendent yet incandescently stupid
