In general, when the Holy Ghost raises up a prophet to call the people to repentance, I would recommend NOT being the ones stoning the prophet.

Explain your username

It's an allusion to a poem I didn't finish writing in college.

I've been told it brings to mind elements of the CCM world (I imagine Hillsong in particular) but I can't overstate how NOT in that world I was when I started using it. honestly it's still very much not my thing.

explain your username:

it's the title of DLS' masterpiece

plus my birth year because when I created my blogspot blog in 2004 plain old "gaudynight" was already taken by some other fan

everyone says it for a reason: really important to lock in when it comes to fitness and health. just establishing good habits — regular exercise including strength training, eating a balanced diet — will pay huge dividends

While doing research on ancient languages for a novel I'm working on I discovered Dr. Martin Worthington at Cambridge University. After years of study, he's come up with an approximation of Akkadian. You can listen to The Epic of Gilgamesh here:

Hear The Epic of Gilgamesh Read in the Original Akkadian and Enjoy the Sounds of Mesopotamia
This clip gives you a taste of what Gilgamesh, one of the earliest known works of literature, sounds like in its mother tongue, Akkadian.

Fun to see a few people frothy with excitement that Archbishop-designate Sarah will mean Anglicans go to Rome or realign global Anglicanism with a new (male) head. Kind of sounds like a church based on gender ideology (rather than Christ) to me! But I am but a simple small town parson ⚓

In honor of National Poetry Day, the greatest parody rewrite of all time:
Screen cap of parodic version of William Blake's "The Tyger" that begins:
Tyger! Tyger! Burning bright
(Not sure if I spelled that right)
What immortal hand or eye
Could fashion such a stripy guy?
What the hammer that hath hewn it
Into such a chonky unit?
Did who made the lamb make thee,
Or an external franchisee?

For the churches that have contributed data so far, the strongest correlation to asa growth over time, more than size, more than number of visitors per week, is how quickly congregations follow up with visitors. Quick follow-up (within a week or, better, a day) is the best predictor. 🕯️

I was doing some research and you have to see this book cover ⚓
Screenshot of a book cover. A bald, heavily bearded man with a facial wound and wearing what looks like, I don't know, a Viking costume? grimaces amidst flying sparks in front of a red-and-orange background. It's very dramatic. The title is Foxe's Book of Martyrs: A History of the Lives, Sufferings and Deaths of the Early Christian and Protestant Martyrs. The author is John Foxe.

The Episcopalians are metal as hell.

Our liturgy is good, friends. Excellent, even. Powerful. I'll never say it's absolutely perfect in every way, but this really has me reflecting on how much time we spend trying to fix things that aren't all that broken, if they're even broken at all. ⚓

This is not a high church parish. For example, as far as I know, chant has rarely, if ever, been used.

Multiple parishioners have told me how beautiful the liturgy was. One said it was her all-time favorite service, and that it changed her mind about formal liturgy. Her background is Baptist. ⚓

I took my priestly ordination and celebration of new ministry liturgy last week entirely from the BCP 79 and the Hymnal 82, with one choral anthem from the New Oxford Easy Anthems Book. We chanted the litany and the Veni Creator Spiritus. My parish hadn't hosted an ordination in decades, if ever. ⚓

I presided at the Eucharist for the first time on Sunday. It was beautiful.

It sank in far more, though, before our one mid-week Mass. On Sunday there's a deacon, a lay minister, and a lot of activity. Yesterday I got ready in the sacristy alone for the first time.

It's heavy in the best way. ⚓
Mirror selfie of a smiling white man in his late 30s. He has a short, dark beard, and very short hair that's this in top (he's a few days behind on re-shaving his head). He's vested in a white cassock-alb tied with a rope cincture and wearing a green stole with gold fringe over both shoulders. A clerical tab collar is visible behind the neck of the cassock-alb.

He is standing in a small room with red carpeting and dark wood-paneled walls. An assortment of unlit candles, including a Paschal candle, are clustered behind him.
