Variation and prognostic potential of the gut antibiotic resistome in a population-based cohort www.nature.com/articles/s41...

We look at the risks and sociodemographic aspects of antimicrobial resistance, and its association with recent global urbanization and middle-class growth.

Sometimes you meet absolutely incredible bioinfo-magicians.
It was a huge privilege when @shenwei356.bsky.social
joined our group for a year on an @embl.org sabbatical.
While here, he developed a new way of aligning to
millions of bacteria, called LexicMap 1/n

Efficient sequence alignment against millions of prokaryotic genomes with LexicMap - Nature Biotechnology
LexicMap uses a fixed set of probes to efficiently query gene sequences for fast and low-memory alignment.

Very happy to have been awarded Best Medium Talk at #MicroSeq2025! 🌟
Wonderful to see archaea receiving more attention in human microbiome research :)

💩 @gazollavolpiano.bsky.social starts us off with a comprehensive study of archaeal diversity and clinical associations in faecal #metagenomic data. Check out what kind of role these strange microbes play in human health! #MicroSeq2025 #archaea #guthealth

📣Just out: Exposure accumulation drives age-dependent disease architectures and polygenic risk scores www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1...

Very cool results: Accumulating E with age reduces heritability & PGS effects

one cool thing about Scandinavian countries with comprehensive public health insurance is places like Denmark can do a study on… everybody and conclude that yes COVID vaccines are safe

Amazing article on how Australia can end HIV by 2030 if no one is left behind!

As a migrant w/o Medicare, I still hit barriers even with the privilege of an academic job. I can only imagine how much harder it is to access healthcare for migrants w/ fewer resources.

Australia can eliminate HIV by 2030 – but only if equity is at the centre
Australia could end HIV transmission by 2030 – but only if we address stigma, reform laws, and ensure access for the most excluded.

It bears repeating that the new paper showing that the U.S. has significantly higher rates of pediatric deaths than similar countries demonstrates that these deaths are primarily caused by:

Firearms
Motor vehicle crashes
Substance use
Homicide

And are driven by:
Economic and racial disparity
Trends in US Children’s Mortality, Chronic Conditions, Obesity, Functional Status, and Symptoms
This study aims to determine how US children’s health has been changing from 2007 to 2023 using multiple data collection methods and a comprehensive set of health indicators.

"We are speaking on behalf of hundreds of NIH staff who are standing up together to say: WE DISSENT.

I am so scared about doing this but I am trying to be brave for my kids because it's only gonna get harder to speak up."

Thank you to Dr. Jenna Norton and NIH scientists for your courage!

Thanks to everybody who chimed in!

I arrived at the conclusion that (1) there's a lot of interesting stuff about interactions and (2) the figure I was looking for does not exist.

So, I made it myself! Here's a simple illustration of how to control for confounding in interactions:>
