East Berlin, Kronenstrasse, 31 July 1960. I post photographs taken on my many Berlin visits in the 1950s and 1960s. 180 unique historic street images of East and West Berlin are in my book "Berlin in the Cold War" (Amberley Publ.). #Berlin #GDR #DDR

I'm proud to be described as a 'linguist', because that means that I'm curious about other cultures, welcoming of other traditions, eager to discover more of the world, open to diverse perspectives, excited about new experiences. There's a whole lot more to linguists than vocab and grammar.

'Berlin at Night.' (c1860) Described by Degas as the ‘greatest living master’ during his lifetime, Adolph von Menzel is less remembered today outside of Germany than the French painter who admired him; his career deserves far greater appreciation and study than it receives.

Known for his unforgiving and often critical depictions of German society during the Weimar Republic, this self-portrait by Otto Dix (1912) pays homage to the work of the Italian Old Masters - the carnation was a popular motif in northern Italian Renaissance painting.

Hey! October is German-American Day. Re-upping my photos of Hamburg's Emigrant Museum, the actual former emigration halls of the Hamburg-America line, from which thousands of German and other Central European families set off for the sea journey to the New World.
