Con: Can we talk about the scene that was cut - the scene with the rhino horn. David: Oh yeah, tell me what you think about it. Were you pissed that it was dropped? Con: No, when we shot it I felt this is so overcharged, I don't know what we're going to do with it. I don't know where we're going to place it. David: I felt like I overwrote it and I think whatever you were feeling when you were playing it was what I was feeling when I was writing it. Con: It was very sexual. David: I think it plays that way in the writing but then watching it, Blackbeard is all jacked up on shit and he's unhappy and Izzy's like "Hey boss, everyone is pissed." You're essentially telling him that there's going to be a mutiny. And Blackbeard is like "Yeah, I don't care. We can keep going." And then he throws that knife that's in the trailer. We actually had to drop that knife shot and come back and get it. But watching it was like just more of the same. Nothing overtly happens - it's just that he throws the knife and then he's being a dick and Izzy's just like "Fuck this sucks." And it was like, this isn't interesting. If you saw the scene, you'd be like yeah...ok? The sexier scene to me the scene at the end of the first season when you're in his cabin. And so I've already done that scene better. Con: But he's subservient in that scene - Izzy. In the rhino horn scene, there was more of a pushback I thought. Con: But he's subservient in that scene - Izzy. David: But then I felt when watching it [the rhino horn scene], I felt it was also subservient because the boss is yelling at him and he's scared of the boss. Watching it, I felt like we know Blackbeard is fucked up, he just murdered a bunch of people on the boat. We don't need another reminder that he's really fucked up. And Izzy's just like "Fuck, this guy fucking sucks it's scary." I don't think he was scary enough to warrant..what he was doing in that scene wasn't interesting enough - we just saw him murder a bunch of people at a wedding. And then he's like "Actually I'm more fucked up!" At the end of that episode he shoots you and then the next episode he's maybe going to kill himself in front of you and it's like this is too much of this. Con: I mean who hasn't had that happen to them? [laughter] David: Watching the edit, I was like I'm bored. If I'm watching the edit, and I'm just like no - the scene gets dropped. It doesn't happen often but it happened in the second season because we were writing more quickly than I would have liked. When you're writing more quickly then shit hits the table for actors for the table read that should never hit the table read. Because I feel like if a scene hits the table read and you cut it from the shooting script, the actor goes, " fucked up." Con: And we do, mostly. David: Why would you not? If I were in that position. And then there are things in my job where I'm like " fucked up. They canceled my show, I fucked up." It's not about that. Con: It's not, absolutely. David: But we want to do well for each other, we want to win, we're scared. Con: We did win, David. [Con and David hold hands]
