We have built endless machines to stimulate us at all times and evoke a neverending torrent of strong feelings, and nothing is so stimulating, so evocative, as cheap nostalgia paired with the assurance that you’re right to feel everything good has been taken from you, you’ve been wronged by history
this is why i prefer the term "the malaise." there is *demonstrably* a malaise. nobody likes The Current Thing™️. but *what* they're mad about? or more precisely, what *caused* them to be mad? that is a much harder question, and one it does not do to presuppose

I call this the Dream Vampire Economic Model. It also exists in the arts, publishing, and every other somewhat prestigious industry that young people want to work in.
there's a parallel between nonprofit world and academia, where there's a constant tide of idealistic, hopeful people coming in the door, and the people on top are able to lever that commitment to The Cause to extract from them in a way that's harder when everyone's just there to make a buck

PROMOTE YOUR BOOKS! Romance readers, pirate readers, come one, come all! Shiver Me is a fantasy tinged romp with a sparkling HEA!! There are lots of bisexual pirates, some disgruntled navy men, and enough outfit swapping to keep Shakespeare interested!

The most realistic scene in DS9 is when Gul Dukat whined about how the Bajorans never erected a statue in his honor. A prophetic text.

There is no pile of gold that we can take to have universal healthcare without having to increase taxes generally, no. But there *is* a loaded fucking gun we need to take out of their hands, yeah.
It may sound radical, but if one guy has so much wealth and power that he can use the large newspaper he owns to publicly threaten to ruin a service we all rely on, presumably as a bargaining tactic to get lower rates, we probably need to tax that guy until he can't do that anymore.
Exclusive: Amazon has long been USPS’s top customer, providing over $6 billion in annual revenue in 2025.

But Amazon may give up its long-standing partnership with USPS to deliver packages itself, which could spell disaster for the mail agency.

Delhi Crime is an unflinching, excellently written show about rape and the systemic mistreatment of women. No other show is half as good at doing what it's doing. I wish more people would watch it.

too many of us have built ourselves a mind prison. we torment ourselves because, on a deep level, that certainty of doom is more comforting than the uncertainty of struggle. and plus it gives you the thrill of feeling more righteous, more cynical, more knowing--even as you scare yourself sleepless.

I try to adhere to the "words mean things" principle because advocacy.

If we go to the "every evil thing that happens is the *worst* form of evil imaginable" standard, we both lose a lot of tools and, more likely, demoralise people.
