It's that time of the year again and I am chuffed to be included in Elsevier list of the top 2% of most-cited authors for the year 2024 (at rank 51 within the field "Logistics and Transportation") as well for the whole career (rank 326) lnkd.in/e6QprVQh

Interesting-looking new article into how social practices in the football industry are flight-intensive.

There's been much research on how that's the case within academia, but I feel like we've been overlooking other sectors... doi.org/10.1080/2331...

Transportation research is under threat. The Transportation Research Board is canceling contracts, restructuring committees, and signaling that it will censor work presented at its annual meeting.

Hearing reports that TRB is censoring annual meeting content. Authors are receiving a "Notice of Non-Selection" when notified that their papers were not sent out for review. Esp shitty for students who submitted work on Aug 1 only to wait two months for no reviews. Shameful behavior by TRB.

Sounds very interesting thank you!

No I meant more like why did we 10 years ago expect the transport system to change radically because of AVs and 10 years later basically nothing has changed because of that?

Help colleagues!

Does anyone have good references on how in the transport sector we tend to fall prey to the "hype cycle" and keep having unrealistic expectations that new technologies will "change everything" or even "solve everything" in our sector?

After exploiting the Italian navy support to the flotilla for electoral purposes in a local election, Giorgia Meloni made the bold move of washing her hands of the matter and, as is now her habit, sitting back and doing nothing except accusing everyone of shady dealings.
Giorgia Meloni
@GiorgiaMeloni

I read with astonishment the words of the Flotilla that accuses me of considering "a danger" unarmed civilians and ships loaded with aid.

The truth is simple: those aids can be delivered without risks through the safe channels already set up. Insisting on wanting to force a naval blockade means making oneself -knowingly or not- instruments of those who want to blow up every possibility of a ceasefire.

Therefore, spare us the lessons in morality on peace if your goal is escalation. And do not exploit the civilian population of Gaza if you are not truly interested in their fate.

I was very sorry to hear about Oliver Schwedes' passing today

He was my main contact person during my time as a guest-PhD student at TU Berlin in 2011-2012 and I remember him as a kind and professional man

I enjoyed reading his original research contributions on transport policy through the years

What counts as essential travel? How does this differ across people? What level of mobility can be sustained within planetary boundaries?

These researchers get closer to answering those questions than most. Wish this kind of thinking was more central to climate & transport policy making in the UK.

This is an absolutely brilliant paper that I can only recommend to all those interested in transport poverty/equity but also in sustainable transport/climate, and on how to reconcile the two.

I can only hope that it will have the impact it deserve

Clearly, these are just the first steps in that direction, but it gives us a place to start, which is great. Hopefully much research will follow suit.

And I was impressed by how the authors handled and brought together the literature, which is so disparate and siloed!

What Marlin & co-authors accomplish here is something I've banged my head against repeatedly in my career (how to quantify minimum mobility needs).

I've always brushed it aside as "too difficult" but always hoped someone smarter than me would do it. They have!
