If Canada is buying 16 F-35s, I think they're good. They don't need 90 of them. One will do the work of multiple Gripen in combat. Fill the rest of the force with Gripen to fly cheap and use the F-35 when it counts. And assuming they're ever in combat, the USA is likely to also be engaged with same.
The federal government had planned to buy 88 U.S.-made F-35 fighter jets but Prime Minister Mark Carney ordered a review of that purchase.
