So happy to announce our new preprint, “A geothermal amoeba sets a new upper temperature limit for eukaryotes.” We cultured a novel amoeba from Lassen Volcanic NP (CA, USA) that divides at 63°C (145°F) 🔥 - a new record for euk growth!

I’m voting hematite!
Hematite is cool not just because it’s got a high Curie Point, holding on to magnetic orientation until a high temperature and is therefore very useful for paleomagnetism studies, but also its red streak earned it the cool nickname of “bloodstone”!

Even without a government shutdown, a third of the US Geological Survey’s Climate Adaptation Science Centers could wind down or cease operations this week because the Interior Department is refusing to submit paperwork to release funding.
‘Wholesale destruction’: Government shutdown or not, critical science programs are at risk
The Trump administration has proposed devastating cuts to federal Earth and climate science programs, and a government shutdown could give them an opportunity to begin implementing those cuts.

yeah they're just murdering random people on these boats
I think the Trump admin assumed no one would try to find out who the people on the boats they blew up really were

Oh wow that's not good. Shallow, very strong M6.3 #earthquake in Afghanistan, a few km away from the deadly M6.0 just 4 days ago! ⚒️🧪

You're looking at the largest land animal of the Permian (~290 MYA), Eryops megacephalus, which translates to "long-face giant-head".

It's a GIANT AMPHIBIAN. Like somewhere between a SALAMANDER & a FROG, but hog-sized.

And, to get this out of the way, bears a striking resemblance to Barney. 🟣🦖

Wondering why rocks are always so amazing. Just finished a trip to Scotland and it seems, once you love geology, you really do find beauty everywhere.

Beautiful mountain in Superior, AZ known as Picketpost. This was a volcano that was a part of the same complex of volcanos that created Superstitions Mtns near PHX. Ocotillo blooming in the desert after a rain with bright red blooms.

Wyoming has some breathtaking geology. Highly recommend going to Sinks Canyon State Park, which is surround by National Forest Lands. If interested in the geology, I’ll post an awesome video of the history and losing river system #geology #karst #caves

Superstition Wilderness. This is the remnant of a caldera that was almost 10 miles across during a very volcanic time in Arizona history. Remember wilderness rules and bring plenty of water. Know before you go and #packitin #packitout #leavenotrace #geology #tontonationalforest
