The daily onslaught of outrageous news of corruption, destruction of government capacity & attacks on science and education in the U.S. right now is dizzying. “What now?” you scream as you scroll through the morning’s news. It’s a little like the world Geremie Barmé stepped into in China in 1974
A constant bombardment of noise and information: China, 1974 to America, 2025
Geremie Barmé lived in China during the dying days of the Cultural Revolution, when every day brought a new political upheaval. It's a familiar feeling in Trump's world.

I saw a post of yours that made sense. Now I can't find it! Interested in world politics, especially China and Global South, authoritarianism, how to resist fascism in the U.S., wild animals etc.

One of the more incredible stories out of LA this year has been how a taco review blog became the best on-the-ground coverage of ICE raids in the city.

They do a dispatch every day, follow-up on the kidnapped people (which almost no media outlet has done), and fact-check government claims.

@lataco.bsky.social first began as a blog documenting local Mexican cuisine. Now, it’s an essential reporting powerhouse to the city as Trump’s mass deportation plot unfolds.

They're still using Signal and they are still *terrible* at operational security

ICE has hired its own photographers and videographers, who are also wearing masks.

Very possibly no political official in history has made so much corrupt money at a pace like this. Mobutu and Marcos looted a greater share of their countries’ wealth over decades but in absolute terms and in speed, Trump shamelessly puts them to shame.

“.. no modern American president has positioned his family to make so much money while in the White House. Already, since the early days of his reelection campaign, he’s more than doubled his net worth to about $5.4 billion.”

I think Musk actually imitated the design of the Casspir, the apartheid South African era police and military vehicle used to suppress protests:

ICE is out of control. They must be reined in.
A post on X by Paris Schutz (@paschutz
), a CBS Chicago reporter, timestamped 23 hours ago, includes a photo of a car with a damaged hood and text overlay. The post reports that journalist Asal Rezaei was doing her job when an ICE agent shot directly at her car today, unprovoked, with chemicals entering through an open window, causing her to feel sick for two hours. It mentions no protester was in sight, and she was simply driving by to check the scene, about 50 feet from the entrance, an area local authorities and news organizations have been monitoring for weeks. The post also notes this incident follows the detention and release of journalist Steve Held the previous day.

The president just gathered the highest ranking officers in the military to tell them that he may order them to kill American citizens -- and that they better follow his orders. All in response to a series of crises that have no basis in reality.

I don't know how to yell any louder.

well, if people have dreams of stopping this, this is more or less than time. once the military is completely in on the thing, I'm sorry to say, there's really no (non-violent, non-revolutionary) way out.

An unprecedented violation of our civic and Constitutional traditions. Calling every military leader in the world back to the U.S. to hear a wildly inappropriate partisan campaign speech followed by a fascist call to use the military against Americans.

it's crazy. there's a wave of backlash against China's new K visa meant to attract STEM graduates on social media. why? the same thing everywhere, fear of immigration, more specifically racism against Indians. influencers push conspiracist misinfo that claims Indians are studying the visa and that

Hongkongers did this in 2020 before the history museum’s permanent exhibition “Hong Kong Story” closed for an extensive revamp. Slated to take 2 years but still ongoing, many fear it will rewrite the city’s past through a “patriotic” lens — fears only deepened by the new “National Security Gallery.”

A point that needs to be made explicitly: Jimmy Kimmel faced down Donald Trump and won. Period.

“Trump can talk tough, puff out his chest and act like he’s an unstoppable force. But he’s not. Money talks. The masses talk, and they matter.”

My column:

www.usatoday.com/story/opinio...
Kimmel won, proving the people have power. And they're not on Trump's side. | Opinion
Regarding Jimmy Kimmel's brief suspension, I haven't seen enough people stating the obvious: The comedian won. Bigly. Donald Trump lost. Also bigly.
