Join us on Wed 08/10 (3-4PM) for an in person meeting to discuss the upcoming national ballot, and how it fits in the strategy for a trade dispute for a just and sustainable funding model.
No more fixes. What we urgently need is a real solution to the structural crisis in HE.
Poster with a magenta background promoting an event titled “A Strategy for UK Higher Ed.” Text reads: “WED 8th OCTOBER — taking the fight from bosses to the government, for a just funding model!” The poster features a photo of protesters holding signs that say “Education funded by expropriation” and “Education not marketisation!!”. The event is organized by Goldsmiths UCU and will take place from 3–4 PM, with instructions to check email for the room.

Today, our branch passed a motion in solidarity with @leicesterucu.bsky.social, donating £500 to their strike fund as they fight redundancies. When so many of our branches are under attack, cross-branch solidarity is key 🫂https://goldsmithsucu.org/2025/09/29/solidarity-motion-with-leicester-ucu/

No need to point out that by using punitive deductions against staff on ASOS, our own national leadership is setting a TERRIBLE precedent—and it won’t help when employers use the same intimidation tactics on us. It's cruel and bafflingly irresponsible.

Absolutely insulting that our own union is trying the dirties trick to get workers to declare participation in order to deduct 100% of their wages for Action Short of Strike.

Thanks for making it 100 times harder to challenge that if and when university managers implement those tricks.

We need more in-depth reporting on UK university finances like this. Research , research funding and their relation to teaching and teaching funding could do with a similar level of detail. Here's a sharing link for 3 non-subscribers: on.ft.com/3ImSMWa

At Goldsmiths and elsewhere, management attempted to force staff to disclose strike participation using forms like this. As a result, they wrongfully deducted pay from individuals who were sick, had just given birth, or were on research leave. Shameful to see UCU use such tactics against its staff!

Who’d have thought that UCU senior management would look at the punitive strategies used by university management in local disputes and think, 'Ah, that’s a brillitant way to attempt some strike-breaking'?
uniteucu.bsky.social
Do you want to know how UCU senior management has responded to UCU branches calling on them to remove their threat of deductions? This is how.

How would you react?

Screenshot of email from UCU management which reads: ASOS Attendance Form - New Weekly Survey
Starting Monday 22 September, all staff will receive an email with a link to the new ASOS attendance form. This short weekly survey is mandatory for all staff, whether you were on ASOS or not. Please make sure to complete it each week, failure to do so may result in pay deductions. The cut off each week will be Friday at 5pm.

🆘🍉 As the genocide continues, a small number of Palestinian students will evacuate the Gaza Strip for the UK, including four due to join us at Goldsmiths for a.a. 25/26. Israeli authorities are forcing them to leave all they have behind, and they need our practical solidarity. Please donate!

Strike action is ON!!!

Next week will be the first of 4 weeks of striking from our members as we continue to say NO to the compulsory redundancies forced on us by the university for their poor financial choices.

Sometimes solutions are easy @drjogrady.bsky.social & @ucu.org.uk

Let’s sit down and talk without conditions or threats that damage everyone. It’s time to resolve this dispute.

Our statement, with support from the following branch committees:
We call on Jo Grady and UCU SMT to:
• Enter negotiations with Unite UCU without preconditions.
• Stop the threat of punitive deductions for ASOS - this breaches UCU and TUC policy and only serves to undermine all of us, not least those UCU members currently involved in legal test cases against punitive deductions after taking lawful industrial action.

Signed, 25 UCU branch committees (and counting)

🔥 Third ballot win in 18 months: 76% YES on 77% turnout for @uniteucu.bsky.social members! UCU Management’s response? Threats & intimidation 🤦
uniteucu.bsky.social
🚨 Third consecutive vote for industrial action 🚨

✅ strike action: 76%
✅ action short of a strike (ASOS): 80%
✅ turnout: 77%

ASOS begins today with @ucu.org.uk threatening staff: "We'll deduct your wages."

Double standards and vindictive attacks undermine us all.

#ReclaimUCU
Jo Grady calling Queen Mary management "vindictive" for making deductions from UCU members taking action short of a strike: Jo Grady, UCU's general secretary, said Queen Mary's senior management had "launched a vindictive attack" on its members, "punishing them for taking part in lawful industrial action" and "cementing its reputation as the worst university employer in the UK" She said: "It is wrong to do this at any time and all the more deplorable as staff struggle to make ends meet in a cost of living crisis."
