Shedeur Sanders: "A lot of people want to see me fail. It ain't gonna happen."
It had been so long since a Browns quarterback won his first start that it wasn't even the Browns.

I like the Metternich quote.

"You can do many things with a bayonet, but you can't sit on it"

If a state's means of maintaining order is solely by force, then it is doomed to being a restless entity that can never disengage. It will continue to escalate in the use of force until it can't.
I like to envision govt like a fist that's closing around something steaming. Democratic institutions mean the fist can open a bit, letting steam out. Authoritarian systems can keep all the steam in for a time, but eventually the pressure is too much and the hand shatters. Guess its a glass hand lol

My dad believes the death of local politics is what killed national politics. He blames the media for that, but not in the stereotypical "mainstream media blah blah" way. Specifically, he believes the death of local papers and media disconnected communities and lowered the quality of journalism.

It's long overdue that the term "Eurasianism" is reclaimed by those who deserve the term. "Eurasian Studies" is a field in which you study the histories, politics, cultures, and languages of the peoples of Central Asia. This is a great book to start that journey.

It's always been infuriating to me how the Dutch have been written out of the history of modern democracy and liberalism. Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Conscience, Freedom to choose one's profession, the Corporation, the legal contract, stock ownership, insurance, all are Dutch political innovations
I was a little amused by the trick question about freedom of speech, which did not seem like a hard question at all, but then again I’m Dutch. FWIW, one of my old professors wrote several papers about the Dutch influence on American history of political ideas. papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....
America's (Neglected) Debt to the Dutch: An Institutional Perspective
In the late sixteenth century, the Dutch fought a successful war to secede from a major empire. They wrote a declaration of independence and adopted a federal m

There’s the joke about Sun Tzu being basic instructions for idiots like “feed your troops” but the most important part of Clausewitz is also just “think about what you are actually trying to accomplish”
What I love about our habit of confusing Means for Ways is that we also confuse Ways for Ends.

Innovation is entirely neutral.

Rework the message. China is betting on being the number one provider of cheap solar panels, wind farms, and nuclear reactors in the 21st century energy transition. That's how they want to become a superpower. Framing the Cold War tech race about energy is something more people will understand.
We’re in a tech race with China– and there’s no area more important to win than on artificial intelligence.

Learning a language isn't just about being able to speak to foreigners. It might sound weird, but it opens the doors to an entire new way of seeing the world to you. I wish I spoke more than 2 languages. I really envy my friend @kendrastenberg.bsky.social who speaks 7.

i think it's bad that Ezra Klein is either unaware of or neglected to mention Charlie Kirk's personal involvement in organizing and fomenting the January 6th insurrection

seems like a pretty important factoid in an article about political civility
