They do. I’m on medication for my mental health struggles, and Charlie is literally a part of that treatment plan. It’s hard to rot in bed when a cat is screaming for their food or wants attention. I’ve even incorporated a routine for cleaning his litter box in my ADHD apps.

Do get me started on people trying pose their pets as ESAs to get their pets into pet free housing. Do we have a crisis of apartments not allowing certain size dogs and BSLs in the US? Yes. Is it justified to lie that you have a condition which requires an ESA to skirt around the laws? No.

Charlie gets to live in pet free housing with me, and that’s it. The only places he gets to go are Petco, the vet, and flying home with me on airplanes. I’m so grateful that I can have Charlie with me. He’s a fuzzy prescription along with my medication.

This little dingus is my ESA. Smokey was my ESA as well. Even though cats cannot be service animals in the US, I still remember sitting with my friend Cassie who was visually impaired and her service dog, Bentley while we talked about the differences between ESAs and trained service animals.

I do not know how to sew. My mom only really sewed my Girl Scout patches on my vest, so I never really learned. My boss at the textile museum is valiantly trying to teach me; but it’s slow going haha.
