Monstrous.

"federal agents detained nearly every resident of the 130-unit building—including children and babies—placing them in zip ties and separating them by race into vans for more than two hours early Tuesday morning."

Good reporting on the South Shore raid from South Side weekly here.

Confirms one thing I was told but didn't put in my own piece because I didn't have a second source and it seemed too insane: border agents segregated arrested residents by race

Families were woken by flashbangs and helicopters as hundreds of federal agents raided their homes. Days later, neighbors are still searching for the missing.

Donald Trump: “We’re going after the worst of the worst.”

ICE arrests two men at a Chicago area bakery. Workers, not criminals. And this is why they need the National Guard?

Former OMB associate director on personnel here: This is blatantly false and inexplicably undermines Congress's authority. Congress made extremely clear in 2019 that furloughed feds are to be paid, full stop, period. There is no question, except why the Speaker would make such a statement.

Johnson: "It's true that in previous shutdowns, many or most furloughed employees have been paid for the time they were furloughed, but there is new legal analysis - I don't know the details, I just saw a headline - but there are some legal analysts saying that might not be appropriate or necessary"

Trump to exercise monarchic whim and illegally re-direct appropriations is how the headline should read.

Just again, spending and appropriations is a core power of Congress, not subject to the Executive's whims.

Perhaps. But then there were kittens."

If you think today's news media picture is grim, take stock of how Chicago's local journalists are getting at the truth despite Homeland Security's campaign of lies and intimidation.

New on MSNBC: Trump's new acting U.S. Attorney Lindsey Halligan has recruited prosecutors from outside her office to take James Comey to trial, after being unable to find any federal prosecutors in her own office willing to pursue the charges, according to two people familiar with the selections.

The issue before is now is very simple and clear. There is a large and growing movement of leftwing terrorism in this country. It is well organized and funded. And it is shielded by far-left Democrat judges, prosecutors and attorneys general.
The only remedy is to use legitimate state power to dismantle terrorism and terror networks.

This hearing in Abrego Garcia’s civil case was supposed to deal with discovery issues, but it seems to have evolved into a discussion on the merits of whether Abrego should be released from immigration custody. Worth following along (via my Lawfare colleague @rparloff.bsky.social) ⬇️ 🧵
rparloff.bsky.social
(That explanation is approximate.)
The discovery requests, which I thought would be the main focus of the hearing, appear to have fallen by the wayside today. I think that's because Abrego's removal to Uganda (now defunct) or to Eswatini appears to be inchoate if not hypothetical or chimerical

This is the issue. Weiss was one of the "journalists" bestowed with the Twitter Files, which revealed some troubling jawboning, but wildly overstated its case. She's now the beneficiary of an unprecedented, openly censorious government project to purge and remake a media institution.

As you see the Ellisons’ use the husk of Paramount/CBS to hand out fiefdoms to conservatives, remember: This summer Paramount bribed Trump $16m at the cost of 60 Minutes’ integrity. FCC approval of the Ellisons’ takeover bid followed within a few days. Brendan Carr made this statement at the time.
Brendan Carr, Chairman, Federal Communications Commission:
President Trump is fundamentally reshaping the media landscape. And the way he's doing that is,
when he ran for election, he ran directly at these legacy broadcast media outlets, ABC, NBC, CBS.
For years, government officials just allowed those entities with execs sitting in Hollywood in New York to dictate the political narrative. And he has fundamentally changed the game. And you see that really having consequences that are just rushing all through media.

While we were sleeping:

A federal judge in Oregon has blocked the Trump administration from deploying any federalized National Guard—Texas, California, the state’s own—in Oregon.

That’s big news. Even bigger: She’s decided to hold a trial on the merits. That is: She’s putting people under oath.
Screenshot of court order, which reads in part:

“A combined hearing on the preliminary injunction motion land a trial on the meries
under Rule 65(al(2) is set for October 29, 2025l before the Honorable Judge Karin J. Immergut, in Courtroom 13A, beginning at 9:00 a.m.”

Look. Invading our own country is about as straightforward a case as you can have for impeachment. The GOP abandoning the Constitution is kind of the only story there is and it gets no coverage.

This is an old formula used by authoritarian regimes. Stoke chaos and blame scapegoats to justify the use of force.
