Has anyone else been dealing with some serious headline whiplash recently?

Even for those of us who follow #climate and #energy matters closely, it can be hard to know what the hell is going on!

So here's a thread to help climate communicators get a grip on how to deal with this 🧵

Fantastic thread Aaron. That’s a lot of literature to catch up on, but great food for thought.

Completely missed this great paper, amazing effort, fantastic results.

It’s scary to think that a single violation of the terms could lead to reigniting the war.

Any such event would immediately be suspicious as a potential false-flag operation.

I am not optimistic.

Netanyahu told Trump that “if Hamas rejects your plan … or if they supposedly accept it and then basically do everything to counter it, then Israel will finish the job by itself”. Trump said Israel would have his “full backing” in such circumstances.

Just fuck off with this. How about start the conversation by highlighting how much immigrants contribute to the UK - not least by propping up the NHS and social care system!

Also - forced volunteering is not volunteering, it's unpaid labour.

Reform's ‘plan’ to revoke the legal status of millions of UK residents is morally abhorrent & economic madness

The public believe in fairness & mutual respect, not this cruel Trumpian policy that would leave us all poorer. We are not America - we must resist this dangerous turn in British politics.

It makes me really sad (and really angry) that the leader of your party seems so unwilling to address this in moral terms.
I don't want to hear a Labour leader say this is financially and practically unworkable. I want to hear them say it is WRONG.
If they can't or won't, Labour needs a new leader.

Horrible! I find this racist and xenophobic agenda utterly vile and disturbing.

As a EU settled status migrant in UK, I have contributed to UK economy for nearly 25 years, closer to 40 by the time I’d retire, but likely would be denied state pension and other benefits.

Is a global bank collapse coming soon? youtu.be/DaM3c5ybj-w?...

A banking collapse is coming, and the cause isn’t speculation. It’s climate change.

Uninsurable homes mean worthless mortgages, and worthless mortgages mean broken banks. Unless governments act now society itself is at risk.

Yet another rock solid argument for genuine emergency action on climate change. Well worth a watch 👇

Measured, sensible, and much welcomed statement from Faversham Town Council on the idiocy of the moronic flag pandemic.
Statement by Faversham Town Council's
Community Committee

Faversham is a warm and welcoming town
which, throughout its long history, has always
proudly opened its arms to those who seek
refuge. We as a town are rightly proud of our
embodiment of fundamental principles of
British values such as democracy, the rule of
law, individual liberty, and tolerance for the
beliefs of others. However, over recent weeks
it has been noted that tensions within our
community have arisen linked to

unauthorised placement of flags on public
lampposts and abusive behaviour when
questioned. This has led to many residents
reporting feeling afraid and intimidated, and
shamefully others have reported they have
experienced racist abuse within the past few
weeks. Faversham Town Council strongly
condemns any acts of racism, intimidation
and bullying for any reason. We recognise that many residents display the
St George cross and other national symbols
as a positive expression of pride, and this is
entirely welcome on private property or
where permission has been sought.

Faversham Town Council's own flag policy
dictates that the flags of our nation are flown
regularly from our public buildings. However,
we also recognise that these same symbols
of national pride can also be used to
intimidate and cause division, and we call
upon KCC, Kent Police and Swale Borough
Council to work with us and the wider
community to restore community harmony
and a sense of street safety, mutual respect,
and the shared pride we all have in our town
and wider nation,

Finally! 🤩 Our position piece: Against the Uncritical Adoption of 'AI' Technologies in Academia:
doi.org/10.5281/zeno...

We unpick the tech industry’s marketing, hype, & harm; and we argue for safeguarding higher education, critical
thinking, expertise, academic freedom, & scientific integrity.
1/n
Abstract: Under the banner of progress, products have been uncritically adopted or
even imposed on users — in past centuries with tobacco and combustion engines, and in
the 21st with social media. For these collective blunders, we now regret our involvement or
apathy as scientists, and society struggles to put the genie back in the bottle. Currently, we
are similarly entangled with artificial intelligence (AI) technology. For example, software updates are rolled out seamlessly and non-consensually, Microsoft Office is bundled with chatbots, and we, our students, and our employers have had no say, as it is not
considered a valid position to reject AI technologies in our teaching and research. This
is why in June 2025, we co-authored an Open Letter calling on our employers to reverse
and rethink their stance on uncritically adopting AI technologies. In this position piece,
we expound on why universities must take their role seriously toa) counter the technology
industry’s marketing, hype, and harm; and to b) safeguard higher education, critical
thinking, expertise, academic freedom, and scientific integrity. We include pointers to
relevant work to further inform our colleagues. Figure 1. A cartoon set theoretic view on various terms (see Table 1) used when discussing the superset AI
(black outline, hatched background): LLMs are in orange; ANNs are in magenta; generative models are
in blue; and finally, chatbots are in green. Where these intersect, the colours reflect that, e.g. generative adversarial network (GAN) and Boltzmann machine (BM) models are in the purple subset because they are
both generative and ANNs. In the case of proprietary closed source models, e.g. OpenAI’s ChatGPT and
Apple’s Siri, we cannot verify their implementation and so academics can only make educated guesses (cf.
Dingemanse 2025). Undefined terms used above: BERT (Devlin et al. 2019); AlexNet (Krizhevsky et al.
2017); A.L.I.C.E. (Wallace 2009); ELIZA (Weizenbaum 1966); Jabberwacky (Twist 2003); linear discriminant analysis (LDA); quadratic discriminant analysis (QDA). Table 1. Below some of the typical terminological disarray is untangled. Importantly, none of these terms
are orthogonal nor do they exclusively pick out the types of products we may wish to critique or proscribe. Protecting the Ecosystem of Human Knowledge: Five Principles
