I avoid using the word "talent" with my students. I ask them to use the word "skill". Growing up, I was told by many how 'talented' I was. While slightly bolstering, it mostly made me feel like making a 'bad' drawing would break my covenant with the Talent Faeries and my powers would be forfeit.

I know "wow you're such a good artist, I wish I could do that!" is a compliment so I always resist the urge to point out that you, too, could indeed do that by banging your head against it for 25 years

A lot about societies treatment of artists went downhill as soon as people forgot it's a craft one works at becoming skilled at, not some magical power you have bestowed upon you by fairies upon your birth.
