From the point of view of being an Actual Historian I just find the idea of needing to be "proud" of history baffling. Identifying with the history of a nation, which is in and of itself a made up thing, is just weird. It is also something that usually corresponds with not studying history.

the fact it was deemed something needing a vote should've been the write-off to begin with. You don't go "should we or should we not support rights for minorities"
