People who have more complex social identities view political identity as a less reliable source of information about others. Therefore they rely less on group-based stereotypes when judging outgroup members.

Helpful review of four types of interventions targeting misinformation at the individual level (boosting, nudging, debunking, and automated content labeling). No magic solutions, here. I suspect a combination of individual- and system-level efforts are necessary. #PsychSciSky #AcademicSky #EduSky

Psychologists, apply! Apparently we've mainly gotten CS applicants so far. I'd (selfishly) love to have a psychologist. Interests in AI in relation to e.g., implicit bias; cultural influences; fairness; perception; learning & memory; decision making etc. would be a good fit!

Really loved the most recent episode of Search Engine talking about the science behind microplastics. Helpful to discern your personal risk, but really appreciated how they dissected how we as humans navigate uncertainty. Well worth a listen!

“The witch hunts offer a sobering reminder that delusion and misinformation are recurring features of human society, especially during times of technological change and social upheaval.”
The witch hunts of 1400-1780 and today's misinformation crisis have striking parallels.

Both were fueled by new media technologies that allowed false information to spread rapidly and widely. buff.ly/6RFALyJ By Julie Walsh @wellesley.edu

As a new mom, this episode of NPR’s Short Wave left me with hopefulness and excellent resources as I prepare to raise a kid in an uncertain climate. This week’s heatwave has stepped up my climate anxiety, and this was a helpful antidote. open.spotify.com/episode/5mvK...

"The poll found that on a weekly basis more than 90% of people use weather forecasts, job market reports, food safety warnings & other info based on federal science. But only 10% of respondents are concerned that cuts to federal support for science might impact their access to such information." 🧪

Really interesting listen on the impacts of FDA cuts on the safety of drinking milk. TLDR: not risky, but potential long-term consequences for our food safety system in the US. #rawmilk #scicomm #birdflu

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. faced questions from lawmakers in a pair of hearings Wednesday and did not directly answer whether he would vaccinate his own children against chicken pox and polio. He paused before answering, “Probably.”

How does the EPA know a pesticide is safe to use in my yard?

The EPA must evaluate both the risks and the benefits of each pesticide – and revisit that analysis at least every 15 years for every pesticide used in the U.S. An agricultural science professor explains the process: buff.ly/4HJim9h
How does the EPA know a pesticide is safe to use in my yard?
Federal regulations govern which pesticides can be used and give specific directions for applying them. Ignoring those directions is a violation of federal law.

TLDR:
⬇️ Risk for bird flu is low for humans.

🔥 Heat can kill the virus. Eating raw meat or drinking raw milk might not be the best idea (or ever 🙂).

🐔 Experts anticipate more disease outbreaks in birds, which will likely impact the price of poultry products.
