This article captures a lot of what has been on my mind lately about the industry (and then some). A good read.

“It’s on readers to look beyond the season’s biggest titles that they’re being spoon-fed by major publishers.” We try to encourage this in the store!

Just posted episode 100 — the very last one! — of John Updike's Ghost. Should be on the streamers shortly. It's just a normal episode. Which means it's awesome, but not, like, more awesome than usual.

Just wait till you see what we come up with next.

Very impressed so far. The juggling of characters alone.

(I just read Robin Wall Kimmerer’s new picture book BUD FINDS HER GIFT and it’s so generous and so at odds with the current discourse it really got to me.)

If you walk into a bookstore and see a bookseller crying, ask us what we just read.

Saw some art last week. This was my favorite, at The Campus in Hudson, NY.

As I talk about your book with people I’m discovering just how shockingly few people know Penelope Fitzgerald. We have a lot of work to do! So glad your book is surfacing her for readers.

Stayed late enough for the neighbors to call and make sure we weren’t being robbed. Honestly don’t think it was a noise complaint (but maybe it was).
“Hi Hannah, is it possible there are people in the store, like, right now?”
It was 10PM. Everyone was just leaving. I thought it was very sweet.

Last night I cleared some books off the nonfiction table and a dozen local bookstore owners came and ate pizza around it. It was pretty great. Dinner in a cozy bookstore! Clinging to the joy of that fellowship as I read the news this AM, which these days always requires a general bracing.

I don't know, I decided to start a blog. Some thoughts on books and bookselling:

Sunday morning read, the fictional account of Penelope Fitzgerald’s real-life trip to Mexico. Highly enjoyable so far, somehow the writing keeps you on your back foot in the best way.

Also, EP100 is probably the last for John Updike's Ghost. It needs a new name for the SEO age.

Feel free to offer suggestions.

Once you see this chart, you will never unsee it.

Republicans may lie about what's in their budget bill but the numbers sure don't.
A bar graph. On the left side is a bar showing that Republicans are cutting $930 billion from Medicaid. On the right side is a bar showing that Republicans are giving $910 billion in tax breaks to corporations under their budget bill, paid for by gutting Medicaid.

You cannot opt out of reality!

Our statement in response to the Supreme Court ruling in Mahmoud v Taylor. Image thread with alt text. 1/4
Today's Supreme Court decision, though couched in the language of freedom and inclusivity, is a tragic failure for both the right to read and the rights of LGBTQIA+ people. Authors Against Book Bans stands firmly and fiercely against the decision and its rationale. To allow parents to "object" to the presence of positive books about the lives and rights of LGBTQIA+ people is to allow them to "object" to the existence of LGBTQIA+ students, parents, educators, and others in the wider community. You cannot “opt out” of reality, no matter what today’s majority opinion states. These books belong on shelves and these stories belong in classrooms and curricula.
