New post at EU Analytics - in which I try to tackle the question on who decides EU policy on Gaza.

The question led me to more issues I could cover in one post, so this one starts with EU statements, positions in international organsations and sanctions (with a QMV twist):
Who decides EU policy on Gaza? (Part I)
A look at who can take the EU decisions on Gaza - regarding statements, positions in international organisations and sanctions

So we have Germany saying it is going for the 5% goal, which no one believes they will because they don’t have the political will.
And we have France saying it is going for the 5% goal, which no one believes they will because they don’t have the money.
Welcome to Europe.

When the sea gets rough, you’ll want to be on a bigger boat.
With Trump’s trade war threatening to leave Norway in the crossfire of US-EU sanctions, Norway is facing a similar moment of truth about EU membership as Finland and Sweden did with regard to NATO 3 years earlier.

I argue that it’s time to make it official - for a strong Norden in the EU
To join or not to join? Norway is edging closer to the EU
Trump’s trade war has brought Norway even closer to the EU and increased the urgency for it to make a decision about membership.

At this rate, Trump is soon going to hold cabinet meetings like Turkmenistan's Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow

Idk, I find Trump’s ideas about the EU more entertaining than offensive. They’re equally warped as Putin’s understanding of what the EU is.

We seem to live rent free in their heads and I mean why not. Why not let them think that the EU is this mythical and omnipotent entity

When Russia invaded Ukraine, Finland’s then-president Niinistö said that the masks had fallen.

If anyone was still clinging onto some kind of hope of Trump coming around on Ukraine, this disgrace of a press conference should make everything clear now.

Trump is anti-Ukraine. Pro-Russia.

Putin was the NATO salesman of the year 2022, and now Trump is working hard for the honour to be the EU salesman of the year 2025
Given that the current US administration clear obsession with the EU, Europeans are starting to wonder if they’ve been underrating the EU-thing this whole time.
Trump: "The European Union was formed in order to screw the United States, that's the purpose of it. And they've done a good job of it. But now I'm president."

I make Hungary/Orban analogies for US/Trump, because 21st century democratic backsliding isn't new—see also Turkey, India, Russia, Venezuela, etc—and MAGA sees Hungary as a model.
But they're not identical, and it definitely doesn't mean it's all over in the US. None had America's system or history.
the reason why i hate weimar analogies or hungary analogies or whatever is because they lead people to treat contingent phenomenon as iron clad rules and to ignore critical details like, for instance, the structure of a political system
