The Future is just so weird:

Shares of Metaplanet, a Tokyo-based firm that in 2024 pivoted from hotel management to accumulating bitcoin, were in June 2025 trading at around eight times the value of its bitcoin holdings. www.citationneeded.news/digital-asse...
Digital asset treasury companies are running out of steam
Convincing traders to pay $2 for $1 of bitcoin worked — for a while. As premiums evaporate, an unwind could be painful.

As for Wine Country flagging and interest waning, South Australia and Adelaide just did a podcast add targeting the idea of wine and wildlife. Wildlifeadventure during the day, sipping Shiraz at night. Really smart ad with a new angle around wine I've not seen.

I think about this quite a bit, in a bid to be playful you actually obscure information. Bad copywriting is a thing.

Ever since studying Beaudrilliard & simulacrum, Vegas has been anthropologically curious. Not fun, mind you.

The Cosmopolitan made a ski lodge? Lol

It is weirdly goofy fun. It's like an outsourced concept/idea event company that builds these things for hotels.

I've worked in hospitality, legally, for 30 years. Before that I was a hotel brat doing stuff unpaid at family Hotels.

I currently design and develop and help build resorts or hotels in my wife works in resorts.

Neither of us have ever seen this.

The nature of capitalism, fear,& panic is that if I was a type of charlatan grifter to just want to make money off those things, I could simply say I was a hospitality consultant that would reduce labor cost by integrating AI into your hotel operational workflow. With no plan.

HOT TAKE:

Losing a Michelin Star increases revenue.

It demystifies food, makes it more affordable, less pretentious, therefore less marginalizing or less serious, & therefore more approachable w/ new buzz, it's an experience. It eases up on kitchen & FO staff, makes work fun, creative, less stiff

Hotel advice:

Pockets on robes at home? Great.

Pockets on robes for your hotel, resort, or spa?

Be prepared to spend $60,000 a year of staffing lost and found. Lol

My thread from Twitter 6 years ago... if you like food and the stories behind the invention... this thread is a must!

Especially for San Francisco or Northern California people. =)
Tikka Masala isn't from India, but from immigrants concocting it while in Britain's South Asian restaurants.

In that spirit, I'm pointing out San Francisco Bay Area culinary contributions, an example of why immigrants are vital to culture.

I'd love if other cities did this!

This is me, so I am biased, but this thread is so great.

Anyhoo... if you don't care about changes in hospitality or hotel office work and operations, just enjoy the calming and soothing balm that is a dot matrix printer's sound.

WELL THIS IS FUCKIN' COOL
Earlier this week, all 74 of the Northwest’s endangered orcas gathered into what researchers call a superpod — a sort of all-inclusive family reunion.
Rare orca superpod comes to Seattle
They came together Sunday evening not far from Port Townsend. Why, no one can say for sure, except the participants themselves — and no humans speak their language.

Old timers... what are some words or things in hospitality that are aged out and people wouldn't understand?

Chefs telling a cook to plate at "3 O'Clock" is lost on the non-analog generation.

So what else?

How about punch keycards?

An idea:

Being on twitter is unethical.

But you probably have some great bookmarked threads you did.

If anything is relevant, move it over here!

I'm starting to reduce my footprint, and no need to lose great commentary. =)

I would love to see numbers run on a tropical resort deciding whether to underground a natural gas line for tiki torch infrastructure to be simplified operationally, versus outfitting single natural gas tanks to each tiki torch & dealing with the labor & ongoing expenses.

Napa has always suffered in that the incorporated cities are always lost because people pejoratively say "Napa" and mean "Napa Valley", while search geo-locates Napa the *city*, so Calistoga or St. Helena lose out.

But that Expedia search doesn't hit any wine country well is WILD.

As far as the wine industry-

They always said you plant grapes for your children & olives for your grandchildren.

That a few West Coast properties knew to plant olives in the early 2000s because of climate change is *insane*.

Olives are quickly becoming those woneries top Revenue crop vs grapes.
