I had to do research to confirm it, but I saw (but did not try) one of these at the former Sega World arcade in Darling Harbor in Sydney! I recall thinking it was wild, and then playing Virtual On instead, but now I feel like I saw a legend.

To be honest I only half remember the last-minute papers, but I DO remember forgetting to do the reading, being specifically called on, and having to BS an entire discussion... On Heian-era Japanese court poetry. To high praise on my insight from the professor. A computer could NEVER.

I wrote a 15 page report on heraldic symbolism in medieval armor and weapon design for my art history class the night before it was due (8am class). Made up 90% of it (only found one book for reference) and got an A. GenAI could fucking never.

wrote 20 pages on Faulkner's The Bear four hours before final papers were due on trucker pills and coffee and cigarettes and got an A, fuck you.
You people couldn't hang with real slackers.

This might seem like a small thing; commerical patterns are imperfect and obviously there are a few companies outside the US, and indies too. But we were a hair's breadth from losing a major set of tools for making things, and making things is so important

This right here. I love my art friends and art community, but I'm also trying to run a business as a freelancer/selling products and I need the reach! Every time we scatter to different platforms it's a little harder to exist as a working artist whose primary visibility is only online.

As much as folks might not want to believe it, artists who sell their work cannot survive exclusively on platforms that cater to primarily other artists. The Circulating The Same Five Dollars™️ model can't feed us or pay bills for long. We need places where we can be seen and discovered.
