I think this is not only true of Mamdani, but it's also true of Trump. Reactionary nostalgia is a coherent belief system that makes sense to people. "Centrism" is not.
(Mamdani won because he sincerely believes in SOMETHING and it really helps that the something is meaningful policy for working people.)
The big blind spot for them is that they've forgotten that there's any such thing as sincerity
