Blaming economic woes on Labour ‘wearing a bit thin’, economist tells Sam Hayes

A leading New Zealand economist has called on the Government to “acknowledge that it had made some mistakes” as the economy continued to decline. New Zealand’s economy shrunk by 0.9% between April and June, a blow that Finance Minister Nicola Willis says was the result of a grim national psyche following US President Donald Trump’s tariffs. Talking with Stuff’s Samantha Hayes on Friday, Simplicity Chief Economist Shamubeel Eaqub said the lack of investing, building infrastructure and creating jobs should be more cause for concern with the Government. “The main issue with the recession here is that not only do we have the Reserve Bank being too slow to cut interest rates, the Government’s spending cuts, particularly in infrastructure spending, has really worsened this economic recession,” he said. “A lot of the economic pressures that we’re seeing at the moment is very much to do with a little bit of uncertainty globally, but really it’s domestic pressures. “It’s the fact that we’re not creating jobs, that we’re not investing, we’re not building homes, we’re not building infrastructure. That’s where the weakness is at the moment. Asked if it was fair to keep blaming the previous government for the economy, Eaqub said that response was “wearing a bit thin” and it was time to acknowledge mistakes had been made. “I think you got to take responsibility at some point in time, and I think that point has come,” he said. “What we’re seeing in the political polls and what people are saying about the way the direction of the country is heading is we don’t believe that as a public that the government should be let off the hook and blame everything on previous governments. “The reality is this government has taken some actions, particularly on austerity, particularly around reducing infrastructure investment that has contributed to this recession, has made it deeper and longer than it needed to be. “It needs to acknowledge that it had made some mistakes and correct them.”

This looks like such a cool event! This event could especially be insightful for students majoring in biology. It would allow them to look at the similarities and differences in the anatomy of different vertebrate species. Biology majors at Wayne State should definitely consider going to this event
