the destruction of chattel slavery is one of the great accomplishments in our nation's history and the reason conservatives hate celebrating it is because doing so legitimizes the black counter-narrative of the united states

wow I wonder if the cops who lied about the sitting senator even though everything they did was on tape are also being less than honest about the presence of violent agitators at the protests in los angeles. they might even not have told the entire truth about other protests

A lot of this "does the left have a model of masculinity"? hand-wringing assumes that there *is* a masculinity that's recognizable as such that is not reducible to an entitlement to dominate and rule over others. I'm not convinced!

like, i fear out of all the boys/men we should be worrying abt in terms of general well-being, middle-class cishet white guys are the very bottom of my list bc they will always be the most secure in our societal safety net
hunterscheng.bsky.social
not to support a leveling down approach to society or anything but it sure is baffling to see ppl argue abt why we as a society need to cater to a demographic that built the system they are now complaining about
hunterscheng.bsky.social
every time i see someone talking abt the crisis of masculinity or w/e i feel the slightest shred of sympathy, and then i remember the cishet white men being centered in that complaint

oh, you.. feel excluded from society? wow, what a unique phenomenon. surely no one has ever experienced this before

But also, I confess, my sympathy for the Men-Adrift has its limits, because it is not, in fact, impossible for men to live good lives. I know a lot of men happily paired off, with kids and good lives - including some who did not have high educational attainment or inherited wealth.

🚨🚨 Alarming NSF policy update

By accepting an NSF award, an institution now must say it's:

1. Not engaging in boycotts of Israel (yes really)

2. Not advancing or promoting DEI in violation of anti-discrimination laws

Announced via a footnote today: nsf-gov-resources.nsf.gov/files/gc1-ma...
(c) Discriminatory prohibited boycott means refusing to deal, cutting commercial relations, or otherwise limiting commercial relations specifically with Israeli companies or with companies doing business in or with Israel or authorized by, licensed by, or organized under the laws of Israel to do business. The term discriminatory prohibited boycott also includes an academic boycott of Israel in which an educational or research institution enacts or implements restrictive policies, or otherwise participates in activities having the object or effect of restricting ongoing or potential academic, educational, or research institutions. Notwithstanding any restriction on the applicability of other NSF rules and regulations, the requirements in paragraph (c) applies to both foreign and domestic institutions receiving funding from the NSF. (a) By accepting the award, recipients are certifying that: (i) They do not, and will not during the term of this financial assistance award, operate any programs that advance or promote DEI, or discriminatory equity ideology in violation of Federal anti-discrimination laws; and (ii) They do not engage in and will not during the term of this award engage in, a discriminatory prohibited boycott. (3) NSF reserves the right to terminate financial assistance awards and recover all funds if recipients, during the term of this award, operate any program in violation of Federal antidiscriminatory laws or engage in a prohibited boycott.

"Women are PIs on 58% of the canceled grants, although they are PIs on only 34% of all active NSF grants.

Similarly, Blacks are PIs on 17% of the terminated grants, although they make only 4% of the total pool. Hispanic PIs and those with disabilities were twice as likely to lose a grant."

Another scoop from Jeff Mervis (@policyhound.bsky.social): NSF's ~1400 grant terminations have disproportionately affected PIs from groups underrepresented in science: women, racial & ethnic minorities, & those with disabilities. 1/3

So…what does this all mean?

A key feature of the original study was replicated: there was no significant difference in accuracy between autistic and non-autistic chains, indicating autistic people are not impaired in information sharing in same neurotype chains
