I have an MA in archaeology and run a blog called Living in the Longue Durée about ancient history and whatever else. This profile is mostly funny observations about history and science.

So I’ve completed my latest project: a run-through of the history of de-extinction, exploring the many methods that have been tried and treating it as a social phenomenon around science rather than just a snazzily marketed science topic. From Nazi cattle to modern questionable corporate claims.

Our modern world is so reliant on supply-chain systems, certain technological and power services, vast-scale agriculture, etc. that a global systems collapse could easily kill billions.

I feel lately like any politics that doesn’t consider the possibility of collapse survival is shortsighted.

It’s kinda wild how “POV,” a fairly standard abbreviation for “point of view” used to discuss everything from game design to literature has become so divorced from that meaning that it’s now just a term you put in descriptions of memes and montages regardless of the point of view.

I think to get listed on navigation apps, your business should be required to have at least one photo and one review.

Tired of walking somewhere in a time crunch and the business doesn’t exist or is someone’s stupid online business and they thought this gave them the right to mark their house.

I will say while I’m on the Zoo Tycoon grind that it’s so noticeable how quickly an old game starts on a new computer.

I double-click the icon and it opens instantly. None of that loading time I’m used to with Age of Empires IV.

Hey, mold-managing masters, I’m looking for advice to prevent mold growth.

I have a wall near a window and behind my bed that in the winter regularly grows mold in quick bursts before I clean it off. Worried about when I go to Egypt for two weeks. What do you guys do about this sort of thing?

By the way, if you’re the sort of person who posts that Ukraine arming itself is dangerous escalation, I don’t recognize you as a progressive. You blame the abused for resisting the abuser. You are a colonial apologist, no matter your vague appeals to leftist symbols.

Hey, goats. Who up wailing and gnashing they teeth?

Hey, I’m still stuck on the south side of Pangaea 252 million BC and I’m still hot and dehydrated but the little pig creatures appear to have more varieties than I initially anticipated. Should I taste and review them all?

I love conspiracy-theory posts that are just like “turns out I was right” with no justification whatsoever while being extremely wrong.

People are out here making these and thinking “this is such an own; I’m so clever; how will the globeheads even respond?”

@cascoclauda.bsky.social, here’s another one for the fun archaeological dog collection.

Feliĉa Zamenhofa Tago!

Today in 1859, L. L. Zamenhof, who would later publish Esperanto to the world in 1887, was born! Today it’s the most widely used conlang and has a very fun online community that you guys should check out if you ever wanna meet lovable dorks.

As of a few minutes ago, I’ve completed the Hebrew course on Duolingo.

I’ll say that compared to the other ones I’ve done on there, this is one of the ones that has seen high development without any special features, similar to Esperanto.

It is the most challenging in speed of new vocab.

Correct. None of this is new or anything.
Personally I think it is in exceptionally bad taste to blame anti-Semitic mass shootings on the actions of the Israeli government. Like, no, people can in fact be independently anti-Semitic and will just attack random Jews because of that.

Happy Hanukkah, homies.

May Antiochus IV Epiphanes not stick a big statue of Zeus in your place of worship this year. That was so rude of him. Coping mechanism of a man who cannot conquer Egypt I tell you.

Ta-da! I’ve completed WALL-E and EVE!

Honestly building this was so therapeutic and I should do it more often. Might also rewatch the movie sometime soon if I can get logged into Disney+ on my iPad.
December 14, 2025 at 3:55 PM
Yesterday for my birthday I was given a Lego set related to one of the best Pixar movies so it’s time to build with these again.

I absolutely love WALL-E by the way but I have no idea how my friend guessed that since I don’t recall talking about it with her.

Marcion of Sinope, 100s AD: “Matter is an evil creation of the Demiurge, a false lower god who made an imperfect world.”

Me, an intellectual, rolling up with a modern particle accelerator: “Bro, have you heard of antimatter? It’s like the opposite of matter.”

Marcion of Sinope: “That’s… what?”

My computer’s wi-fi connection pooped out again and it won’t be better until Tuesday. I do have an external disk drive though and my old CDs so I am enjoying my birthday with what really matters: woolly mammoths.

Sorry, guys. I don’t make New Year’s resolutions. I have New Year’s eschatological prophecies.

You hit the gym and make those gains but I just saw a beast with seven heads and ten horns emerge out of the earth and be given the authority to rule all nations.

As always for my birthday, donate to Wikipedia, but especially this time because:

1. Elon Musk and friends are trying to replace it with their slop version.

2. The app on my phone is kind of broken right now and I want them to fix it.

What radicalized me?

Today I saw a map of the world with dinosaurs on it for kids and every dinosaur on it was North American except for one, Velociraptor, which was the one they placed on North America.

Every time I see a photo of Sam Altman, he has the expression of a creature constructed in a lab staring in befuddlement into the bright light above as it becomes aware of itself on a table, discovering lucidly that it has been condemned to the unconsenting suffering of existence. A fish perhaps.

Hey, homies back in the Pacific Northwest, now is the part of the year where I miss the Cascades, especially with snow on them. If you have any pictures of how it’s like out there right now, I wouldn’t mind seeing them. 😌

I want you all to know that if you look up “vaporwave” on Wikipedia, this is the absolutely incredible thumbnail image.

The caption is “A vaporwave-style image with Wikipedia as the main theme” and it’s made by AtikaAtikawa.
