ARCUS was important. It jumpstarted careers in science. It amplified voices that have too long been left out of research. It did all that and more for very little money, and now it's gone, arguably when we need it most.

The Phillies survive another day. If the top of the lineup is back in form, we might have a series. Let's do it again.

I'll tell you after one more out.

I get wanting to be home. I always want to be home. But if I buy a playoff baseball ticket, you couldn't drag me out of the stadium before my team's 27th out. I'll never understand leaving early, no matter the score.

Saving #vultures: As these ecologically important birds disappear, nature loses its “clean-up crew” and diseases like anthrax become more prevalent and dangerous. Here's what Zimbabwe is doing to save them. therevelator.org/saving-zimba...
Saving Zimbabwe’s Vultures • The Revelator
From poisonings to collisions with power lines, these birds face many threats. But as they decline, so does their ability to control the spread of deadly diseases.

An actual hot take: Too many authors are afraid of editors watering down their voice or whatever and not afraid enough of editors letting you put any old slop on the page.

100%. Good, clean and on time beats unreliable and occasionally brilliant. I hope I manage to get a few sentences in that I'm really proud of, but I've come around to thinking of that as a bonus.

We're losing so much all at once. This may seem small in the context of all that loss, but I still think it deserves to be remembered. I wish I could write an obituary for every single program that has been cut this year. I'm glad I got to write one.

twice a year the entire U.S. press becomes a marketing extension of a single billionaire-owned retailer, and nobody in any position of editorial power thinks it's weird or gross

Reuters photographer Jonathan Ernst noticed that Bondi flipped open a file during the Senate hearing and he zoomed in.

Inside were her crib notes for attacking the senators.

The GOP now practicing Cliff's Notes Fascism

In other words, under oath Bondi was purely a performance.

We always say that the victors write the history, and it's usually true. But one of the things that broke this country, or at least kept it from healing right, was abandoning the most basic truth of the Civil War: the losing side was bad.

Good piece at JSTOR:

How the Union Lost the Remembrance War - JSTOR Daily
The victors of the American Civil War failed to write their story into the history books, leaving a gap for the mythologizing of the Confederacy.

This would be insanely stupid even if it were legal. "Come work for the federal government, where you randomly won't be paid whenever Congress is dysfunctional." What a recruiting poster.

Johnson: "It's true that in previous shutdowns, many or most furloughed employees have been paid for the time they were furloughed, but there is new legal analysis - I don't know the details, I just saw a headline - but there are some legal analysts saying that might not be appropriate or necessary"
