I'm Ian, an Irish freelancer translator based in Germany who overuses Spongebob gifs.

I've been on BlueSky for a while but always as a backup plan in case I gave up on Twitter. Which I have done now.

I also co-host a Blackadder podcast called Lord Of Adders Black: @lordofaddersblack.bsky.social

Turns out that when Americans said "If it weren't for us you'd be speaking German now..." their objection was to learning a second language, not fascism.

Fascinating thread, this one 🧵

you ever think about those real weird overlaps. like tennessee williams might have listened to the ramones
ianwinick.bsky.social
Absolutely. When I was on my Erasmus year in France, I encouraged my French friends to correct my French - but not after 10 at night.

And when they've caught their breath, you might explain that, when we were in the first (or second) flush of youth, it was necessary to make a telephone call to a building in the hope that the person you wanted to speak to was in it.

Possibly, but I'm far too modest to consider that.

Yes, but what was the Orange Fucker doing on the list in the first place?!!

Another thoroughly enjoyable episode. It’s great fun listening to the other guests to see if their “Firsts” follow a similar link to mine or if they are completely different. Great listening.

Loved this episode 😍

Not just my section, of course, but finding out what music my fellow guests associated with "joy".

Rejoice, episode 3 is out now! This week is all about The Sound Of Joy.
Guaranteed to lift your mood!

Very fair synopsis, Bill. Just been listening to it after the No Prayer episode.

I find that I need to be in a certain mood for this album - much of the material is, as you say, "plodding" and "ponderous".

Having said that, I think Sign Of The Cross is one of the best things Maiden ever did.

Great episode, Bill.

Lovely to hear that you have the same soft spot for this album that I have always had as well.

Off to the gym now and I know what I'll be listening to.

Love that song too! Never understood why it gets such a bad rap.

This deep dive on bands I have no idea about was fabulous and fantastic. I feel a little smarter today as a result. Perhaps that isn't difficult.
I love this series. So much to experience. I feel heavier, but that could just be the beer I drank...

Well played, my friend.

Sagen Sie mal ... haben Sie viele Freunde?

One I use in real life here in Germany - although it's more for people generally acting obnoxiously in public - is "Do you have many friends?".

I was taught in allyship training that “did you really just say that” and “dude, not cool” can be really powerful disruptors in conversation with people you know in real life.

I’ve used them (and seen them used) quite successfully
