A great piece. Practically, we need more research looking into thwarting autocratization.

Turkey’s opposition is gaining popularity and may still be able to tilt the playing field to their advantage — despite the regime’s tightening repression, argue Berk Esen and Sebnem Gumuscu.

I am extremely happy to announce that I have successfully defended my PhD dissertation. This would not have been possible without the years of supervision by @zsolt.bsky.social.
I am also very grateful for my panel @marikenvelden.bsky.social, Gábor Simonovits & @andrasbozoki.bsky.social

⚡️🏳️‍🌈After Viktor Orbán’s government passed an anti-LGBT law to ban the Pride march in Hungary, Budapest mayor Gergely Karácsony announced the city will officially organize Budapest Pride as a municipal event on June 28.

This means the ban won’t apply: police can’t disperse the crowd or issue fines.

Essentially, the big tech narrative about #AI adoption in the #labor market as a boon for us to "have more time to be creative" and "spend doing what we truly love" is once again [surprise] a scam. Read more in the University of Chicago report:

Spoke with The Independent about the Vatican's strategy of "radical transparency" in the weeks leading up to Pope Francis' passing.

TLDR: Prebunking works! Getting ahead of rumors, closing the information gap, and leaving zero room for speculation does well to mitigate the spread of disinformation.

While this idea is fascinating in terms of functionality, "they can give us back things like time" argument was used for computers/GenAI. Yet here we still are on the 40h work week, with people being fired left and right. What will be the socio-economic result of a big uptake of robots like Neo?

Marine Le Pen has been sentenced to four years in prison. 👩🏻‍⚖️

➡️ Two with electronic monitoring, and two suspended. She is banned from holding public office for 5 years for embezzling EU funds to finance her party.

She calls it “a political decision.”

Charlie Hebdo calls it “retirement at 56.” 😂🇫🇷
Black-and-white satirical cartoon by Charlie Hebdo. Marine Le Pen is depicted as an elderly woman slumped in a wheelchair, looking distressed and tired, being pushed by a smiling man in a suit. A building labeled “EHPAD” (French care home) is in the background. The caption reads: “LE PEN – LA RETRAITE À 56 ANS” (“Le Pen – Retirement at 56”).

This speaks to the increasingly growing role of private businesses in digital #authoritarianism. When a monopolist like #Google bends to the will of authoritarian governments, what to expect of the local businesses? How do we design policies that prevent this kind of irresponsible behavior?
